Away To The Beach....

Palace Pier Brighton - Brighton's Palace Pier viewed from the promenade.

Now that the weather is supposedly getting warmer and Summer is well on its way, people are going to be flocking to the beach. The Londoners will get into their cars and red, double decker buses and travel roughly fifty miles to Brighton to spend a day on the beach and the pier there. Brighton is quite a popular place for visitors and I can see a couple of reasons why, but having lived there for over eighteen years, I had seen enough. The Pavilion is interesting and very attractive and there are a couple of good parks if you know where to find them, but I like the seafront early in the morning, when it's quiet and deserted. The younger set are going to work and the older set are not yet up and ready to come out, so, at 8.30 in the morning, I liked to arrive at the seafront. The sun was low in the sky, and not too strong yet, and the air fresh. The pier and the promenade entertained no more than about fifteen people apiece. So, I'd meet up with a friend, and take coffee and a bacon sandwich, outside the arches, under the pavement above and just relax for a while, taking in the sea air, and people watching. Then, we'd wander along the beach if the tide was out, collecting shells and pebble which were unusual, and perhaps taking a paddle at the edge of the waves, holding our skirts up or rolling up our jeans to avoid getting them wet. Then we'd go onto the pier, and walk to the end, watching the fisherman at the farthest point, to see what the caught. Leaning over the railings, we'd watch the swirling water below, and the patterns the surf and bubbles made, seagulls screeching overhead. Whoooooooosh, the power boat would come hurtling under the pier and out the other side towards the marina. Then we'd sit awhile, before wandering back, taking an ice cream or some crepes or donuts on the way. The air wafted the aroma of donuts and crepes past your nose, and you just had to have one or the other! lol. Seagulls would swoop down and peck at your donut whilst it was in your hand, only to get a clout on the beak from us! Pesky thieves... did they go off fish, or something? By this time, it's late morning and getting a bit hot, so we'd make our way to a nice pub, where we could sit outside and have some lunch a bit later and decide what to do in the afternoon, because the beach is crowded now. So, will you go to the seaside this Summer and if so, what will you do there? Will you build sandcastles (impossible at Brighton, the beach is pebbles), or will you fly a kite, or will you bathe either in the sun or the water? What do you like to do at the seaside?

I think dogs are still allowed on some, but others don't allow them. I don't think Brighton have any restrictions but Littlehampton and Bognor do, so it's not easy to find a place for dogs to run. He'd love the water, I'm sure.. I can imagine him barking at the waves and shooting up and down the beach! ha ha Thank you for your response, Gabs... have a great day. x

Darking, you certainly have the gift of putting across the scene so vivid and wonderful that I wish I was there to witness everything. It has been rather long since I last went to the beach. The beach here is nothing as wonderful and spectular as what you described. What I see are mostly people, occasionally a few ships and yes, the clouds. I like standing by the shore and let the waves beat me wet.

Hi Honey, Oh dear aren't you a lucky girl, as for me the weather has started to get cooler due to being on the other side of the world, oh my goodness that is a long way to go to the beach. Yes the beaches are wonderful to enjoy first thing in the morning when there when a crowd has not developed yet. I do hope that when I come to England that I can see some of your beaches you have there. I love to bathe while I am at the beach. When I am at the seaside I like to collect the pebbles I have some from Tonga in the South Pacific. xx

I used to live about a mile from the beach, on a hill, so that I could see the pier and the beach. It was only 20 minutes walk there and so invigorating early in the morning. You won't have much problem in getting to an English beach. It's never too far from anywhere being such a small island. Thank you for your response and Brightest Blessings, my friend. South Pacific huh? I'm jealous!!!!

Awwww, I hope you can move to New Zealand soon and find some nice beaches onto which you can take your dogs. The dogs certainly seem to enjoy beaches, and the water. Thank you for your response, Marlyse, and Brightest Blessings my friend. x

Hiya my friend, The Oregon beach is about 100 miles but unless i can get someone to take me i wont be going. I don't have a car. I do love the Oregon beach though it wil be something i will miss when i move to Arizona. we usually go and fly our kites out there. there are lots of kites. Sometimes we build sand castles. I like to just sit and watch it and love the sunsets. its so beautiful then.

Yes, not surprising... you have an awwwwwful long way to travel to another coast and beach. Take it from me, Snow, I've been to the Majorcan beaches, English beaches on each coast, and the Oregon Coast. The Oregon Coast is by far the best... the sun was shining when I went to a lighthouse there, the beach below was sandy, there were a couple of big rocks, a few yards into the water and the water itself was a beautiful turquoise colour, edged with foam. It was beautiful and somebody told me the colour of the Pacific Ocean changes with the weather. In other words, it must be very clear, to reflect the colours of the sky.

I've been to the Oregon coast and it's the most magnificent seaside scene I have ever encountered. So dramatic, the cliffs and surf and the ever-changing colour of the Pacific. Wonderful!

I have visited and enjoyed Brightin but it has been about 18 years since then! As usual you brought the scene alive for me - the only difference was that this time I could match it up with my memories! I love going to the beach with David and the kids; burying each other in the sand - splashing about in the water, playing with a beach ball or sometimes swing ball if we have taken it! We usually take a picnic along and enjoy eating it - sand and all! Of course we don't even think about leaving until it gets late and we will always go for a pub meal or a chippie tea! I don't think we will make it to the beach as normal this summer but you never know! Thanks honey for getting me to think of the many lovely memories!

Being a local, Brighton is not my favourite. I used to enjoy Littlehampton West Beach but it's not the same now. The dunes are fenced off and I find it quite boring. I'm glad I provoked good memories of visits to the seaside, for you. Thank you for your response my friend, and brightest blessings.

I read about Brighton Beach when I was young. I 've never been to UK. You described the beach scene beautifully. Thank you. I been to Bondi Beach in Australia, Long Beach in California and saw the beaches along the Pacific Coast Highway, also in California. The sceneries are great. I don't go out to the small beaches in Singapore anymore because of the hot and humid weather and my eyes couldn't stand the glare of the sun. Best wishes to you. http://www.streetdirectory.com/stock_images/travel/scenery/2/2/10/Singapore_Beaches/

I don't think you'd like Brighton Beach so much as Long Beach or the Pacific Coast. lol. Still, it has its own charm. Thank you for the link, which I'll have a look at shortly. Brightest Blessings for a great day.

brighton seems to be a nice place according to your description. i think i might go there this summer then. i love the beach and it's fresh air. last year we went to skegness and devon. i loved devon. i just would like to sit by the shore and watch the peaceful waters or the moody waters, depending on how it is. and i could literally just sit there all day, LOL.

Brighton Beach Evening - Deck chairs on a deserted Brighton Beach in the evening.
The only real drawback with Brighton Beach is that it's all pebbles, but there is a bit of wet sand when the tide goes out. I'll try to find another pic. I go to Minehead in Somerset quite a lot... the beach there is fantastic and you can see Barry in South Wales across the water. It's the inlet of the River Severn. Lots to do there if it gets a bit windy on the beach. It's normally quite a sun trap but it does have its moments. There's a quaint little harbour there, the Mine Head which you can climb, and look over the sea, and a steam railway which travels between Minehead and Taunton. That's only a part of it too. lol. Thank you for your response MLGB, and Brightest Blessings.
