Just why do wiccans/pagans prefer silver?

I was responding to a discussion about gold and silver and it was asked what was your preferred precious metal for jewelry, then it dawned on me...now I've ALWAYS had a preference for silver, but just why is it that silver is the preferred precious metal amongst we who follow the pagan/wicca path?? For instance you never see gold rings, necklaces or gold-toned atahmes, or chalices...it's always silver or silver-toned--and that picture of the chalice by the way is the one I have...got it at the Pyramid Collection

Silver have various magical properties. All minerals have healing abilities to a certain extent. Depending on the colour which influence the vibrations - certain minerals are good for certain parts of the body. Silver vibrate to most of the body and mind. So it is a good condutor for magic.
In the olden days all the nobility and very rich people used only silver eating ware. Silver gets absorbed by the skin and into the blood. Someone with a lot of collidal silver in the blood have the blood getting a bluish tint - hence the word blue-blooded for nobility and royalty. Collidal silver is a wonderfull natural anti-oxidant and helps to keep you healthy.
Hope this helps a bit.

I've always preferred silver to gold. Does that make me an honorary wiccan? :-) When my husband-to-be and I were shopping for a wedding ring, we were very, very poor, so it was kind of lucky that I didn't want a gold ring or anything with stones. For some reason, there were no silver rings, so I picked a plain band in white gold. We spent the enormous sum of $10.00. Still wearing it after 50 years.

Thank you! I'm honored. Even if I could get my ring off, which I can't any more, I would never risk losing it. I'm not much on symbols, but this one is truly important to me.

I've read that it has to do with silver is a metal that is considered 'female' because it's the color of the moon (which we know is a symbol of the Goddess). And gold is considered 'male' because it's the color of the sun (which is a symbol of the God). So that makes since considering that Wiccans at least are more drawn to the Goddess.
I have seen a few gold things though on ebay but I thought they just looked strange! LOL

I think some of it does have to do with the femine or Goddess side, the lunar aspect. Also as another pointed out it does look good against other colors that are associated with the path.
I think a big part though is the fact that Silver has a long mythical history of being pure. That it is symbol of the good or light side of this world. It defeats certain evils and protects good people. It's one of the things that can kill a werewolf and depending on your legend vampires do not like it although it won't kill them. This idea continued to be shown even in some stories today, like the Lone Ranger. His symbol was a silver bullet, to show the good side against the bad.

It's kind of odd when you think of it though...yes, I remember that the use of silver was good to triumph over and kill werewolves and vampires...and the lone ranger with his silver bullet...I say strange...since many people have connected witches as evil that silver wasn't used against us...instead...WE WEAR IT...LOL

Good point. Just goes to show how Wiccans and Pagans just don't fit into the preconceived ideas others like to place on things :)

I've been told before that silver is the color of the moon ~ whereas gold is the color of the sun. (They're actually meant to represent them.)
I've always preferred silver too ~ but didn't know why. Same as you. :)
Then, when I found out why... I realized that I've always been a "creature of the night." And it all made sense.
I do like gold... but often times it is too bright or too gaudy. I'm a more calm, peaceful person & I like to keep to myself, blend into the woodwork, so to speak. And silver seems to call less attention to me as a person, but allows me to still express myself.
Many Blessings,
Gwen

For me its simple, I'm alregic to impure metals, I break out in a rash if I wear yellow gold. Normally I silver, white gold, or platinum. They are the only metals I can wear without breaking out into crazy hives. That and I just don't like yellow gold, I think it looks ugly.

I prefer silver over gold these days but thats only because I personally think Silver looks much nicer against my skin rather than gold...As for never seeing gold items/jewelry etc etc for Pagans, I've actually seen plenty and some of them were VERY nice pcs too...I think you find more silver and pewter simply because its cheaper really

Well I have to say I didn't know that - and, as I said to you in another discussion earlier, I really do learn something new every day from your discussions, pyewacket. As Pam says, - I amagine it is something to do with the Moon, but I don't know that for sure.

This is an interesting concept and I've never thought about it before until you brought it up. When I was younger, I didn't mind gold, but now, I really do not like it, I really prefer silver. However, I really don't have very many ideas as to why this could be.

Me too hun. I have a lot of silver jewellery, silver celtic knotwork rings with black stones, usually jet or onyx or obsidian. I have silver chains, and a lovely silver chalice too. Someone once told me that silver was a metal given only to the Goddess, make of that what you will hun.

i think a lot of it is lunar/feminine influenced..
but in my case it also "locks" me (maybe i should say grounds).
i'm one of those people electronics and watches fail around.i've noticed the more silver i have on,the less it happens.

I don't know why. I am not a wiccan and this is veering a bit off subject, but I know that iron and salt are suppsed to repel faeries, so maybe it is rooted in some similar belief, only the opposite. Maybe the silver is supposed to have protective properties or something like that.

I never thought about it will I read this discussion. I like silver cause it looks better on me than gold does plus silver is not as expensive as gold and it is much sturdier than gold.

Well, I'm not a wiccan but I just kinda always preferred silver also. I think it's overall a prettier metal. Maybe most Wiccans just have better taste than average. LOL

I prefered silver as a child. When I got old enough to care about jewelry I always wanted gold..that meant you were rich...lol But then as I grew up I prefered silver and still do now. I don't really care for white gold.

So much for having gold though to pronounce to the world you're rich...I don't think it's as done as much as it used to be..but remember when for awhile there were gold chain snatchers...Mmmm..no one seems to steal silver--just as well..right?

Could be that I have a little wiccan in me because I have always preferred silver. I posed that question about a month ago myself. I get catalogs from Pyramid (I don't know who reccomended me). They have some lovely things, but I have not bought anything yet.

I firstly thought it is related to Moon, which is in all old cultures the best symbol for feminity and famenine powers which are somehow the main "ingredient" of all magik, and maybe somehow the base of many pagan/wiccan beliefs.
Then I thought further and I "Mithrill" came to my mind. In talkien books, Mithrill is a sacred silver that only nains know how to extray it from Earth, and that elfs appreciate a lot. It is used for magik weapons that are always related to good morals. Gandalf is called "Mithrandil" by elfs (while ognorants call him "the grey").
Well, Tolkien books are fiction, but he always took inspiration from england and nordic old religions, so I guess here is the key for a masculine side of the silver mistery.
So maybe it is that actually silver has special metaphysics that pagans and wiccans are more able to feel and use, or maybe it comes from old metaphores and psicological relationships we still have in our subconciousness.

I'm not much of a gold person. I love my silver. I don't know why but when I wear silver , I feel better. Gold does nothing for me. Actually I really hate gold. I often ask myself why? I can't figure it out. I however don't know why Wiccans & Pagens prefer silver. I don't want to sound stupid here, but perhaps gold is just to greedy. And that is why we tend to shy away from it. Silver is simple.
