This novel by Gregory David Roberts is a literary masterpiece. There is so much originality in his writing. It is a New York Times bestseller and is a fictionalised account of the life of the author. Shantaram is the story of a fugitive on the run in Bombay, India who sets up a free clinic in the slums of Bombay and works for the Bombay mafia and fights a guerilla war in the mountains of Afghanistan. The novel is slated for production as a Hollywood movie and set to star Johnny Depp.

This book took me ages to read thanks to the tiny font and huge number of pages. having finally fished with the read, I felt great respect for the author not only for the way he has written the book but also for the pain he'd undergone and the strenght he must have displayed to be able to go through his highly eventful life. What is remarkable though is the matured sensitivity with which he is able to write about all of his experiences...its not just Gregory the writer that shines through, but Gregory the person!
