Rose ice cream

My fiance and I were in Orlando a few weeks ago and had dinner at a wonderful vegetarian Indian restuarant called the woodlands. On the desert menu they had rose ice cream. I have never had rose ice cream before, but I like rose flavoring in other foods. We decided to get some, and I must say it was one of the best things I have ever eaten before. Sadly, they import it from India - so I can't have it again unless I go back to Orlando. Have you ever had rose ice cream? Do you know where I can order it from? If not, what is the most unusual flavor of ice cream you have had?

I've never tried rose ice cream before, only lavender, which is nice too. You don't have to go back to Orlando for rose ice cream if you can manage to make it yourself... ROSE ICE CREAM 6 1/2 cup heavy cream 2 tsp. rose water 1/8 tsp. salt 3/4 cup granulated sugar 1/4 tsp. red food coloring Combine heavy cream, rose water, salt, sugar and food coloring. Churn freeze. Makes 1/2 gallon Or if you prefer it made with petals... ROSE PETAL ICE CREAM Recipe Courtesy Of The Border Grill Petals of 3 fragrant organic roses ½ cup milk 3 ½ cups heavy cream 1 cup granulated sugar 6 egg yolks ¼ cup rosewater, or to taste, available at Middle eastern stores a few drops red food color, optional Wash the rose petals in cold water and pat dry. In a heavy, non-reactive saucepan, place petals of 2 roses, milk, cream, and ½ cup of the sugar. Place over medium heat and heat to just under boiling. Let steep about a half hour to infuse. Combine the egg yolks and the remaining ½ cup of sugar in a mixing bowl. Whisk until thick and pale yellow. Bring the rose/cream mixture back to a near boil and whisk ¼ of the warm mixture into the egg and sugar mixture. Then pour all of the egg mixture into the rose milk and place over low heat. Cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture is thick enough to coat the back of a spoon. Strain into a bowl and chill on ice. Pour into the ice cream maker and freeze according to the manufacturer's instructions. Transfer finished ice cream into bowl and add the torn petals from the remaining rose. Fold into ice cream and pack into freezing container. I hope they might help. Brightest Blessings.

Thank you very much for the recipe. Does all ice cream have egg yolks in it? I don't eat eggs. Hmm what does lavender taste like? I've had violet flavored food before and that's pretty good.

No, I don't think all ice cream has egg yolks in it, but there's probably a reason for it, for binding, or something. Lavender has a taste of its own, but it tends to have a slightly minty lilt to the flavour. Violet is nice too... yes, I agree with you. I love Palma Violets too... the little tablet-like sweets that act as a breath freshener. lol.

I've never heard of rose ice cream or lavendar either. I must have lived a sheltered life. I just might pull out the ice cream churn and try to make some this summer when I have more time.

Personally, I have never heard of it. We have a couple of Indian type cousines here in the Seattle area, and I might have to look into this one sometime. I just wonder what it tastes like?

It tastes really good... it's hard to describe the taste... it's not like fruit... it's not like candy... it tastes kind of like it smells. It's good though.

I have never tried rose ice cream. However, since i just moved to Orlando, I will go ahead and look up the restaurant that you mention and will try it. The most unusual flavor of ice cream I have ever tasted is garlic ice cream. I had it at a restaurant in Los Angeles, CA called The Stinky Rose, where all the food was heavily spiced with garlic. Despite its rather unappetizing name, it actually turned out to be pleasant.

Wow, I have never heard of rose ice cream before either. That's really interesting. I've never had it before, but it sounds like it would be good to try sometime. I would certainly be curious to see what it's like!

I've never had rose ice cream, but I've had other rose flavoured things before and I can't say I'm overly fond of the taste. I adore roses and their scent, but anything foody is just a bit strange to me. Almost like I'm eating perfume, heh. The most unusual flavours I've ever had were green tea, azuki (red bean) and ginger flavours, all three were great. Very strong in flavour and creamy.
