Change the monitor on my computer

I need to do this so that I can then install the video driver. Only problem is XP stops me from completing my task. I realize what I need to do is this... 1. "Right Click" the mouse anywhere on the "BLANK" area on the desktop and click on PROPERTIES. 2. Click the SETTINGS tab and then click ADVANCED. 3. Click the MONITOR tab and then click PROPERTIES. 4. Under MONITOR PROPERTIES, click DRIVER then click UPDATE DRIVER. 5. On the HARDWARE UPDATE WIZARD, select Install from a list of specific location (ADVANCED) then click Next. 6. On the next HARDWARE UPDATE WIZARD window, select DON’T SEARCH, I WILL CHOOSE THE DRIVER TO INSTALL. Then click NEXT. 7. On the following window, click on HAVE DISK. 8. Type “D:\ENGLISH\DRIVERS” (Where “D” is the drive letter of your CD ROM Drive) on INSTALL FROM DISK window then click on OK. 9. Highlight the model of your monitor on the following list under HARDWARE UPDATE WIZARD then click NEXT Only problem is that in step three the properties button is subdued and can not be clicked. I have tried adding hardware to put the display in but it XP will not offer me displays to add. My system is currently showing "default monitor" as my display. The device manager does not have "display" anywhere in the list or I would try updating the driver "ini file" from there. The floppy for my monitor only has ini files on it. No setup.exe to run. I am thinking there might be somewhere in the registry that need tweaking so that this properties button will be click able but don't want to mess with that untill I know better what I am doing. If you have any suggestions to help me past this barrier I would really be very happy.

I think the first thing you better do is check with the mylot police, you have probably been banned from changing you computer because you have done it in some way that is not politicaly correct. You need the work signed off on by a Indian computer engineer and then a political ok from a musilum cleric if none of this works check with the CIA they could ruin a hill billy picnic.

I like your sense of humor herrbaggs! heh You are my friend. How about the terrorist training in New York State now? Wonder if there is any new news on that?...

First try to find out what monitor You have. If You know it then just download drivers for it!

www.monitor-drivers.com/drivers/51/51470.htm Download and install it. It should be the right driver. Username for the site is probably "driver2" and password is "all" (without quotes).

Ok, the problem was totally a Microsoft thing. They want to take over your PC and they want you to just let them do whatever without questioning them. I had all the stuff I needed for this it was just a matter of figuring out how to make Microsoft do what I needed it to do. I solved this by not admitting that I could read the text in a dialog box during installation. Once I made that change XP let me change the monitor. Before I think I was experiencing a catch 22 Microsoft flaw. I couldn't change the monitor without changing the graphics card and the graphics card software install would not let me install their driver unless the monitor was setup. It appears to me now that if and when XP gets 'default' monitor into place it can be a challenge to change it. And that is wrong on M$ part. This properties button should have NEVER been subdued under any circumstances!

I tried that but add new hardware would never show me anything about monitors or displays. I thought it was very strange.

This problem has been solved. The problem did not have anything to do with the monitor driver I had. Access to update the monitor was totally not allowed. It was a Microsoft problem and I found a work around. Thanks for your response however.
