My computer hates me =(

I'm always off mylot most of the time on Mondays and Tuesdays, but I was also offline yesterday because my computer decided to have problems. Apparently my second hard drive is just shot, the computer won't even boot with it hooked up. The only way to get it the computer to work at all was just to take that drive out. Thankfully it wasn't the main one, which has every picture ever taken of our child on it (which I have backed up since this scare), along with many writing and art projects we're working on. Still, I lost 6 whole seasons of Scrubs, a lot of anime, and a few programs that I had downloaded. I bought a new bigger drive to replace it, but since the computer completely dies whenever I plug in that old one, I'm assuming I won't be able to salvage anything.
I'm annoyed both by the loss of my files and by the fact that my whole day off was wasted over computer junk yesterday. Not only was I not on mylot at all hardly, but most importantly, I spent pretty much no time with my son.
Anyone else had computer problems lately and wants to vent?

My six year old computer went on the fritz about a month ago. I think it need a new mother board and am hoping I can salvage the hard drive (what is on it). It is no use getting upset about it, since I have gotten my money's worth from it. I had some other problems from time to time but have been able to figure them out myself. I might have to buy a new computer later this year if I can come up with the money. You have my sympathy and I hope you can get it to work.

Hey lecanis, don't plug your hard drives anymore less you do serious damage to them. Have an upgrade in your power supply first. It seems that your power supply is having a hard time supplying for your additional hardwares. This is the most common causes of hard disk failures. Consult with your nearest computer store to see what power rating is appropriate for your hardware configuration. Hope this helps. Cheers! Happy Posting :)

I know how that feels. I posed the question of possibility getting a new computer to my husband yesterday, and he said "No way." And he's right, we have a lot of debt that we really need to take care of before we spend money on things like a computer.
Good luck to you!

lecanis, its still possible if you have a friendly computer shop close around who is reasonable in rates that they can snap shot that old hard drive, and grab your data off of it. I certainly could if you were close :)) The one poster suggested an external case and using your files and transfer wizard, that would work also. If you are interested just give me a PM and I will help you through it. Other wise look in your phone book, I know there has to be a computer geek with a small shop somewhere that could do it for you very reasonable. Of course the data retrieval would be be dependent on how many clusters and bad sectors on the hard drive. In most cases we can get the majority of the data recovered.

Once I get an external case, I will definitely let you know so you can help me through it! I'm not sure when I'll get a chance to pick one up though.
As for taking it to a shop, I'll look into it, but the ones around here tend to be kind of expensive to do anything.
Thanks for your suggestions!

I know how it feels. It has happened to me too, in fact, several times. Your problem with the computer booting seems to have been solved with the replacement of the old disk with the new one. As for the data on your old drive, there is one other thing that you can do to try and retrieve it. If you have any friend or relative who is familiar with the working of linux/unix operating system could still come to your rescue. Ask them to mount your hard disk in linux and try to rescue the data. If the problem is virus related, it won't affect the linux system and you will have your data safe and sound. If it fails to be read even in linux, I'm afraid you are out of luck, but you could try. Always make it a practice to back up your crucial data at regular intervals onto a permanent medium like a cd or a dvd. Most of us place a lot of faith in the hard disk, but it could let us down, you know! It is very sickening to lose data that is of such importance to us! I mean, songs and videos, we can find them back on the internet, even if it means a lot of hunting and downloading, but personal snaps and home videos are something that would be the worst things to lose due to a disk error. All the best!

Thanks for your suggestion! I'm sure I have friends that could do this, I have a lot of friends that are really into computers. I'll have to do some calling around and see who can help me.
I was pretty lucky this time in that it was mostly stuff I had downloaded that was on that drive. But I did back up all my photos and such after this scare, because next time it could be my main drive!
Again, thanks for your advice!

Mmmm I see... I have experienced this again and again. I work on video editing, which consumes much more computer than any other computer things, and I had many times that kind of problems with my working computer. Sometimes I spend a week calling the technitian and waiting for him to even guess what happens. When I realized how much I could loose, I decided that spending 100€ in an external USB hardrive where I can backup everything is a good election. Then I also bought another on to have two backups, since it would be like loosing my life if something ever happens with my videos... God and all Gods and Godesses of every religion keep me safe from my computer attacks please! :)

That's our next plan, to buy an external hard drive as well to backup things on. I think it's definitely worth it when you have a lot on your computer. Right now we just bought a new internal one so we could reinstall a game my husband really likes to play that wouldn't fit otherwise, but we're going to buy an external one as well soon!

Oh my computer hates me too. I think there are little fairies living in it and they like to play games. My roomate moved out over two years ago. She lives 3000 miles away she has dial up and I have cable...it never fails when she logs on to aol my computer freezes and if I sign on when she is online..her computer freezes. And I mean freezes to the point of having to unplug it....lol And it doesn't matter if I am signed on to aol...if I use firefox and don't even sign on aol she still freezes my computer when she goes online...it's the strangest thing...hehe Also my mom leaves work at 4:30pm so many times I want to send an email and catch her before she leaves work...even if it's 4pm and I have a half hour..the computer will freeze before I can even write an email...it's like it reads my mind and the madder it can make me the better...lol

What do you mean 'lately'? I'm still venting over 6 months ago - first lost my dear companion of 8 years a Compaq desktop that served me well (lost just about everything). 2 months later the used old laptop I'd picked up crashed and burned due to a teenager thinking he could do anything on the poor thing. Have a new laptop now but don't let the kid use it unless I'm right there - strange thing is he was using both computers when they crashed.

Computers definitely bring out the love/hate in me. It is so frustrating when they don't work and you have to fiddle faddly to repair. I need to back up some of my stuff, now that you mention it. I write and do photos, so I know what you mean about losing stuff.

*nods* Photos were the big thing for me. I take photos of my son with my digital camera all the time, and I would hate to lose all those pictures of him. I now have them all on disk, just in case something does happen to my main drive. The writing and art stuff my husband and I have done is also now on disk. Next we're thinking about getting an external hard drive so we can back them up there too!

I hear you! I hate it when things like that happen and they are so time consuming and no one else in this house knows how to sort it out so I always get the fun job of fixing things!
A couple of weeks ago Zoo Tycoon got stuck in the drive and it quit opening. It looked like it was going to have to go to the shop as the usual, paperclip in the pinhole was achieving nothing. I finally got some wirre off the trellis outside and managed to pick it like a lock. WHat a waste of many, many hours, though!

I had a hard drive go on me too, one thing I found is that sometimes a hard drive won't work at start up but will work in an external case. An external case you can get here for about $20. With an external case and a usb or firewire connection you can connect it after you start the computer. Then when you have that copy the information on to cd or dvd.
I have a drive that won't start up with the computer but that works when plugged in later. What I put on in is copied to cds so I don't have to worry about losing it. I mostly put music and video on it so I can listen and play them on the computer.
