Have you ever thought about the institution of police in the society? What is the purpose of police? Are they the musle men of the rulers to threat and handle oppsoition?
The concept of police is very noble. They are supposed to maintain law and order and give protection to life and property of people. In my school days we had a lesson about the London Police. Police was picturised in that lesson as helping hands to the public.
But unfortunately what I see in my country (India) is a defferent picture. The reputation of police in India is very low. They are supposed to be bribe takers and associates of the many mafias and tools in the hands of evil biased politicians and business men, and many more. Common people are scared to go to the police stations with any complaints. They have to take some political leaders of the locality with them to get any consideration. This state of affairs is unfortunate.
I kmow this is not the way the police are in other countries. There should be excellant police service available in some countris. Even worst countries could also be there.
Can you explain the condition in your country. Are you satisfied with the police in your country?
Do you believe that the police in your country is reliable at times of need?
Please mention the name of your country in your response.
Thank you.

A good police force is one that catches more criminals than it employs. In UK they could be better but they could be a lot, lot, worse
all the best urban

My answer will be NO NO NO NO.. I'm not sure if I can actually tell this here. But I really think that my society's police is not that good. They don't actually help us. There was a time that my mum's bag being grabbed away by people and when we report to the police. The police asked my mum, 'Do you want to make a report on handbag snatcher or missing ID?' According to the police, making report needs a lot more of time, so it is BETTER not to report. I really mad at what the police said. They don't really think from our side.

I live in the United States of America. For the most part our police do serve and protect the people. Sometimes there have been some corrupt police but I do not think that is widespread. I believe that the police in my country are reliable and trustworthy.

I live in a small town with a couple of police. There is also a county sheriff. Not much happens where I live that the police have to be involve in. Also most people know the police officers personally so they are not just someone in a uniform that no one knows.

Yes I am..I know there are some bad ones out there but the majority of them are doing the right thing.
The problem we have here is that they have to deal with so many mentally ill people .They use to have a nut house here. For lack of a better word. They lost funding on it so those people are now on the streets. The violent ones cause problems. The police dont come equipped with straight jackets. Sometimes they are too rough. I think they do what is best for the situation.

This isnt even your discussion and you cant help your trembling hands from hitting those typewriter keys to make yet another ignorant statement. Ok Come on Hit me with your best shot. Fire away.
And by the way, you SET YOURSELF UP for snide remarks

Not at all!! I do not like the police here. Every day i discover new things about them, and when i add up stuff, it seems that they cheat, still and lie more then the average people.
I do not believe that they realy want to help, they just want to get stuff that is good for them from the situation.
I saw alote of situations that they treated people like s**t.
I know it is not always like that, but i never saw the good side..

And the demonstrative kills of some mafiots happen too often:-(

it is the same case everywhere buddy.there are many policemen who are corrupted and to find a person who is not ,the chances are very less.they face pressure from their higher powers like the politicians and mafia and act like puppets in their hands.there are only a very few good men and they are overshadowed b the corrupt men.they are totaly unreliable.and by chance you go against them they can go to any extents to take you down.they book false cases and even kill people in the name of encounter.i dont have even an iota of trust on the so called public servants of my country.

I'm not always satistied with them....but then again,...you can not satisfied everybody.
Of course there are excellent police but I just don't like
the one that looking for mistakes, the one that hiding behind the trees or under the bridge or other cars just to caught people speeding by speeding camera. And also one that have never heard about warning first and fine later. It will be one in couple of hundreds police if they give you warning for your first mistake and must be one lucky day....otherwise, they'll be ready writing tickets and some have even this machine so you can pay the fine directly....phew....
You know...police is just like an old saying...can't live with them and can't live without them....

I live in a small town in Southern California and the police here are very nice and respectful. You can call the police anytime and when they show up they help with the problem. However, some other towns I have lived in the police are not as good! Every city in California has a separate police dept. However, we also have state police (California Highway Patrol), which is an excellent State Police.

There are a lot of good Police Officers in my country. Unfortunately, the media only picks up and runs the stories of the few corrupt. There are corrupt and bad officers, just as there are corrupt and bad people in almost any profession. I work with 20 very good, decent officers. I have worked with all of them personally so I know they are not corrupt. I am a 911 dispatcher and it disheartens me to see so many people with such a bad opinion of law enforcement. I know in many countries they are corrupt, as some are here. It is a sad situation. But for the most part, when you see the type of criminals they deal with every day, you really can appreciate them much more.

The people should be more vigilent to control even the small black spots in the police. What you said about the good officers is very true. But corrupt officers are threat to the society. I think the Govt should keep such officers under close survielence and take corrective meassures.
Thank you for the response.

Actually, I don't have much experience of getting along police. I heard a lot the bad things a lot, they are abuse their power and don't really care about common people. These years it's getting better, because they had been supervised on full range. So, it could be bettter,I guess.

When Marcos fled our country in 1986, our police was seen as corrupt and something that could never be trusted. This was due to human rights abuses and other attrocities committed and was accused as being done by the local police and military. We were left with a crumbling economy and poverty was widespread. Bribes were rampant.
Nowadays our local police is still trying to live down that reputation, though i must say that policemen in our country are much more diciplined as compared before. There are still corrupt personnel but because of investigative journalism these people are exposed and caught, so that policemen here think twice before abusing their authority.

BrianKomeini from Philippines is hopeful that the police in his country is improving. The journalists there are doing a good job to bring atrocities of the police to light. Actually journalists have a major role in the correction of police. But in many countries they are not doing their work sincerely and honestly. They no more work for the society, but for the business institution which has employed them.
From Khomeini we hear atleast in the Philippines they do a good job.
Thank you Brian for your optimistic response.

Nice thread, abroji! Frankly, I am not satisfied with the current state of our police force right now. Some, if not most, Philippine policemen are perceived to be incompetent, lazy, or corrupt.
Their perceived incompetence perhaps springs from their inability to effectively apprehend law offenders or keep imprisoned convicts in jails. Jail breaks in our country are not that infrequent, which could serve as an additional testament to the incompetence of the police in our country.
Their perceived laziness, on the other hand, probably stems from their failure to immediately respond to complaints, among other things, of course. For instance, if there is a bank robbery, they would normally appear in the crime scene after the robbers have fled away.
They are likewise perceived to be corrupt because common collective experiences show that a law offender can easily get off the hook if the arresting officer would be bribed. It's really disheartening to see that the very people who should be upholding the law are the exact ones who are unabashedly violating it.
I know that all would agree that, ideally, the police should be the protectors of the people, the guardians of the state, and the paragons who will render unconditional assistance to those who are in great need. The reality, however, is not that rosy, especially in my country. Instead of being the primary movers in the lessening, if not total eradication, of crimes, they sadly even contribute to the aggravation of such problem.
To be fair, though, I feel that there are still some members of our police force, albeit not too many, who are still wearing badges of integrity, decency, and professionalism. My only hope is that they will exponentially grow in number sooner because our country truly needs them right now.

I don't like the police in the United States-Oregon in particular-because this is where I live. They kill people and hurt people because they are sociopaths and thugs. Barely anything happens to them. I hate them. They are here to keep anarchy at bay.

Hello, abroji,I think the police in australia is generally working quite effectively, the crime rate is not really high here, and there is not much corruptions or bribes here, everyone is treated fairly and the police will not abuse their power. The police in australia is good at catching speeding drivers and not most of the drivers tend to drive below the speed limit.

Likewise here in my country (Nigeria) police are so used to bribery and curruption and their reputation is getting low by the day, but I pray it becomes better. Here a poor man can't contest with a rich man in a court, cos rich men are often considered. The rights of people are being neglected. It just unfortunate. Thanks and have a nice day.

As ihave learned the police in poor countries seems to be more muscle men and bribe people. In india bribery is there not only in police field but in all government departments and even courts are accused of taking bribes .countries like australia the police may have got money to meet his ends in life ,but in india and in poor countries the cost of living or items of luxury or cosumerisam is so much on the high the police men are forced to take bribes to meet the ends.i am not supporting them ,another thing is that the money which they bribe doesnt use for good purpose they go to bars and drink .i think over all corruption has to be corrected.

I think the illiteracy among the general masses is also a reason for this.Manoj your one suggestion is very relevant. That pay and percusities of police personnals has to be increased so as to enable them to keep up with the improved life standard. But India I think is no more considered a poor country, though we know there are millions of poor people here. I read recently that India is the 12th richest country in the world. What an irony a rich country with more than sixty million people below the poverty line!

I feel sorry for our police. They are so understaffed that they can't begin to tackle half of the crime. They are also spread so thin that if they are needed here, they have to call someone from the town over and vice versa. I think it must be a very stressful job, as the village has grown but their numbers haven't and I think they must be as frustrated as any townsperson is who suffers a crime and has no one on hand to deal with it.

I think police department is for safety and security of public. I am aggree to you that the concept is realy nice so as to provide social security, law and order for human beings.
I am also from india .In india it has very different picture in my place too policemen are looked upon as most corrupted persons i too don't like them but i thing as they are as social guards to our society they should behave politely and help the needy one but i think they are slave of money. money is everything for them. its really frustating situation in india. though iam a postive thinker I can't expect any postive change in this department in future.

skbadhan, it is really a pity that our police has lost all it's credibility now. People look at them not with hope but with hatred and terror. The deterioration is so complete that even a possitive thinker like you have no good words for the police. A pathetic situation indeed.
Thank you for the response.
