I have read many books in my time but had never tried anything by Victor Hugo. I am still near the beginning of the book but thus far I admit to being very impressed by it. Hugo makes some profound statements about social justice, souls and the way people tick psychologically. So moving is some of the prose it has had me close to tears a few times and I am only one hudnred pages in. Who else has an opinion on this novel?

I read the novel about a year ago and it was definately one of the best I've read...EVER. Are you reading the unabridged version? I read it...it was quite lengthy. But worth it. I would have to say my favorite character was Eponine...so full of pathos. I must agree that it is an impressive work.

It was a brilliant novel in many ways. I do not know if it was the most entertaining novel I have read, but it was one of the most morally useful. I recommend it to all who forget to imagine how it feels to walk a mile in the shoes of the next man.

I've read Les Miserables, translated in my language, when I was at my 18, and I remember I really loved it.
It was extraordinary, I could have cried.
There was really a world inside each one of those pages, in those sad, desperate, chorally intermingled stories.
It impressed me a lot, I still can remind immortal quotations such as: "laws are of human origin, God makes justice".
I've never seen any film based on this book, but I think it would be impossible to make a good one, it should be too long or too incomplete.
When I told my teacher I'd read L M she told me to continue with The mysteries of Paris: I never did it, but I pass you this suggestion.
Hugo is a great.
By the way, did you know he was son of the official who was able to arrest the famous Italian Highwayman Fra Diavolo?

It's true, it would be impossible to make a decent movie out of this novel for the excatly reasons you give. Then again for me the movie is never as good as the book. I'm always disappointed.
Thanks for the factoid about Hugo's father. I did not know that.

I have read it three times and I was impressed by Victor Hugo as a novelist!
The story has real touch of life with the system and its irony too! As well as human efforts regarding survival and upholding the values... beautyful work and good characters!
I remember I have seen friench film also!

I loved most parts of the novel. I finshed it a while ago now. I didn;t like the long description of battles or somewhat dull tangents that were impossible to skip. I agree with yout about the interesting characters. I also think the novel had some very meaninful proverbs. It was worth the read, although it took alot of reading to get through.
