I'm a Chinese student and my Major is English Translation.I just think learing English is important in nowadays, not only the Chinese people. For me,English is just a tool to commuicate with others,to help me fisnish me job better. That's enough. The more you learn, the more you will find language isn't everything. If you only know the language, well, suppose you can speak English as the native speakers, then what happens? You can find it's still hard to understand what the native speaker are talking about! So English isn't everything,it is just a language. When you learning a language, you should learn the culture of this language, because every language is based on one or more than one culture. So language is just a tool, but without it you'll find it's hard to communicate with others. But the essential point of language is the culture background!

You are welcome.:)
One of my friend,he studied abroad for 7 years in Newzealand but finally he chosed to come back to China.Though he knew he may not adapt himself to his motherland, but he came back.Because he found though he had been in Newzealand for 7 years,he was still a "foreigner" there. He can use English fruently but it was hard to communicate with the local citizens. And his story makes me think a lot, what the purpose of going abroad and learning English? If English itself is necessary, why so many students go abroad to learn the "natural English"? I'm still not sure about these two questions but what I learn from my friend's story is,language isn't everything.Yes,now in China, there is a trendy of learning English. But I believe that what we really must learn isn't English but our traditional culture and the culture of other foreign courntries.

thank you for sharing your opinion again.
i am so glad to accept your opinion.but in reality, many people to learn english is just on purpose.it is pity that they don't learn english by heart.they just consider learning english well as a living skill in society.
thank you very much.

Not necessary for All people, but it is a need to some group~~
everyone is different, they have some kind of talents of their own, some can command english well, but for some others,it will be a headache...
people in China is somehow make it compulsory to learn it.
I don't think it is quite appropriate~
Some of the college students spent too many energy on passing CET-4 or CET-6,but the results remain miserable...
Maybe they'll acquire much more achievement if they spend more time on the fields they're good at...
What I'm trying to say is we should make the best use of limited talented ones...
I used to consider I'll further my study abroad or sth like this, but right now,I don't think it is necessary,China is booming so fast, more and more giant enterprises will get back to China, there's plenty opportunities to polish ourselves~~
for me ,english is just a tool to better myself along my striving way,so I'll keep mastering it well and make the best use of it to color my life~~~~

tks for your response~
the essense is that, physics is a universal thing,we use it without boundary and time-limitation,it is a common thing aslo, but languages turn out to be a tool, every country has different languages because of their own distinctive cultures, rihgt?
I am not saying we don't need to learn english,of course if everybody has the ability to master it well, then go for it,
what I mean is it is no use for SOME people who are not good at learning english but have talent in some other areas~~

thank you for responding.as you say, english is just as a tool to better yourself, but why all chinese students in the middle school must learn physics which maybe they could not use in the future? because it is necessary for people to master a basic requirement.so i think it is necessary for all people to learn english well as a basic requirement. thank you very much.

Normally, I'd say that the people of USA should learn Chinese, because there are more Chinese than Americans.
On the other hand, it is very important to know your enemy's language in order to defeat him. And if China will take on USA as a global power, Chinese people must know English very well.

The purpose of learning English for Chinese people is hard to say.The reasons are too comfused.Different people have different purposes. But all of us have the same target--learning English is the most efficient way to earn more money,to get a better job.Almost every Chinese students are under the pressure of learning English. So why we students must learn English? The answer is relatived to our country's policy--develop our economy.China has joined in WTO and the role China played in the world is more and more important today.English is as a tool to help us in the international trade and many other aspects in the world,so learning English,is quite important for Chinese.

I dont agree all the Chinese should learn English well,i think it is not necessary. It is a deviant phenomena. But the ministry of education and the school pay most attention to english, english is quaed a standard to scale a student' study,if you want to get the schoolship, your english must be well.I think it is blankety-blank.

I am a Chines student just like you.I like English.Learning English to me is much more interesting than other subjects.
Many people around me hate english classes and feel bored about memorizing vocabulary and grammar.Sometimes I have the same feeling.Though these guys hate english, they still work hard.
Learning harder to get a higher degree.A higher degree may bring you a better job.
Studying for money is a very boring thing.Just think about the games such as oblivion and movies which have not been translated into Chinese. What would you do?Just wait?
I learn it for both my furture and fun.

I don't think so,my friend.Cause it's unnecessary for everybody to learn english, although english has become the language of the world. For instance, people live in the contryside can live a happy and wealthy life without english, they can earn a lot without english. Not all people want to be international, hehe. And for many people, mastering english may be useless for them, they don't use it at all.So i don't think all the people in China should learn english well. But i don't speak ill of english, you know.I just tell the truth.Hehe.

Definitely yes. Being English as the medium of communication for business, I believe China must learn it. Since china had opened their country for business opportunity specially to foreign investor, being fluent in english to communicate in dealing with these investors will help to communicate faster and close the deal clearly.

I suppose that depends on the reasons for learning English in the first place. If it is to travel to a country where English is the first language then I guess it is a good idea. On the alternative side of the argument, I think it is a great idea for a lot of English people to learn Mandarin or Cantonese if they are going to be doing a lot of travel or business in China. I know I would love to learn.
cheers

My answer is no. I do not agree because every person can have their own will. They can learn if they want. They can't if they don't want. It must be the person to decide, not anybody to dectate. For me, English is a very impotant language for those going abroad. But it is not a very important subject to included in the academe.
