To be honest, I really like buying from thrift shops and such. Not only do you often find like-new brand names, but you also find things that are different or original. I really enjoy that kind of shopping, because I always feel surprised and elated when I find something good.
Otherwise, honestly, a lot of my baby's clothes come from places like Wal-Mart. I have looked online at some more expensive places, but I just don't think the clothes are any nicer for the higher cost.

Kmart has excellent prices on baby clothing. And, so does Walmart. Check out the clearance rack in the Walmart baby/kid's department. They mark clothes down after the season is over by as much as 75% or more.
Before my baby was born, I was able to buy almost 30 tops and bottoms and cute baby dresses for a buck each!
That was a real deal.
Shop off season whenever possible for stuff like kid coats and summer clothes.
Second hand shops do work well. Try the Good Will or Salvation Army store. You can pick up brand new kid tee shirts for a dollar each. Great for summer.
Once I got an entire box of practically brand new baby onesies and cute baby outfits for less than five bucks at a church bazarre sale. My daughter ended up using those more than the full price ones that I bought at the store.
Trick is to keep your eyes open, and hit the yard sales.
Also try Freecycle for your city. Post a request for free baby or child clothes. Some moms get rid of their stuff on that site. Do a yahoo search to find the web address of the FreeCycle for your city.

What kind of baby clothes do you need? For my little girl gingersnaps are a great find for dressy stuff... but for the casual home and relative visiting outfits SM department store has a great assortment... you just need imagination to create a lasting outfit. :)

I agree second hand shops and yard sales are the best place to go for baby clothes. They go through them so fast and get all messy so I'd much rather pay 1.00 for pants that would cost 10.00 in stores.
You can find all kinds of really good brands too. I like Carter's baby and baby gap the best. They fit really well and are made well too.
