Freedoms

I've noticed that we seem to be losing more and more of our freedoms. Does it seem this way to anyone else? They are constantly passing laws on what people can and can't do. I think this is a case of Big Brother going too far. I don't feel that I need someone to enact laws to tell me how to live my day-to-day life. Whether I choose to smoke or not; how I want my food prepared; it just goes on and on. Recently in my city they passed a law that you must be a certain distance from your house to cook on the grill. Does anyone else have a problem with this? It seems that some laws they should be passing are sorely missing.

I live in Canada and I agree with you. We are getting "lawed out the bum" so to speak. We can't smoke, we can't talk on cell phones while driving, we have to wear seatbelts, when on a bike, motorized or other you must wear a helmet. You can't rollerblade or skateboard in a lot of cities. so on and so forth.
I understand that a lot fo these laws are in place for our safety but, for years we lived without these laws and we were fine. We are going way too overboard.

Overboard indeed! What happened to freedom? The city of Santa Monica recently passed an ordinance banning smoking outside of coffee houses like Starbucks. It benefits me personally because I can't stand it when people smoke around me. In principle, however, I am opposed to the law because it infringes upon civil liberties.

I am in Germany and it is the same story here. The politicians make laws, laws, laws. I think our laws were better at Bismarck`s time.
It is cruelty against the people and people complain a lot. Right now they snoop everywere and even want to determine what we are allowed to eat. Bib brother is here, too. This type of living we reproached Mao Tsetung of or Stalin. The government interfering in everyday life of normal citizens. They even snoop through computers...

Freedom, freedom, freedom! Well, freedom has always been limited whenever others were present - you know, you are free to sing as loud as you please, but you immediately become considerate and lower your voice when others are present. Although most world governments are obsessed with power and limitations of people's activities, I simply fight the back when I find the laws non-logical and outrageous by standing at the very border or by going around the senseless laws!
For example, if the law says that I cannot grill 100 feet away from my house (although grill smoke is simply aroma to the senses), then I will always make sure that I grill exactly at the 99th feet away from my house! Hmmm, hmmm, hmmm. Well, just remember to be considerate of others, even those making noise simply because they cannot afford to grill! (Laughs)

These sort of laws are mainly needed to ensure the safety of others and reduce the amount of money having to be spent on health care and some other things.
Smoking in example: Fine if you want to kill yourself with it, but you affect the 2/3rd of the average population which doesn't smoke either.
Grills close to houses may catch fire and actually make entire homes go up into flames, affecting neighboring houses as well as you might be able to think of.

Psycho, you are a prime example of what I am saying. Why should your rights (or anyone elses) supercede mine? For every argument you give me I can give you one right back. This is madness!

I am by no means of the imagination rich. However, I vote in every election, and I call and right my senators and representatives. One of my reps has a town hall meeting and I always attend.
Believe it or not, contacting your elected officials is very important. Do it and do it often. It affects things more than you know.

We as a society decide these laws are necessary for the betterment of our lives by who we vote for and so forth. Are we losing more and more freedoms? Yes, and we will continue to. That is the evolution of a society. We start being free and find we need to control ourselves from ourselves, slowly but surely as decades pass, as centuries pass, we turn into communist type style of governing, only we won't call it that. It will still be democracy, but democracy will have changed definitions and generations down through time will not realize what actual freedom was before.

Yes, Definately.. I know we are losing more and more freedoms, I am an internet activist and I get petitions all the time about new laws they are trying to push through and new laws they are fighting and trying to stop going through. Yes, Smoking is bad, but do we really want to allow smoking, and sodas, and fat foods? I mean it is going to far if you ask me... I think we need to stop passing these laws, and bring back common sense, teach common sense, and good values as when they goes people make poor choices.... and it gets worse and worse, until freedom to do anything is gone, and alot of it is pushed in security. Railfans can not even take train pictures anymore in certain areas without getting arrested for being a possible terrorist, this also happened to a man who was just taking pictures of birds in his OWN yard. This is how madening this has gotten... I hope the people of all countries and all nations stand up to this law passing trend before every aspect of our life is regulated and bugged. - DNatureofDTrain

I notice you are from the U.S.,I am in Canada, and in the same boat,I find that about 85% of the laws on the books right now,are of no use but to steal money.
I found Canada turn commie when the idiot Trudau came to power, now, thanks to his protagais in the liberal governments,we have next to no freedoms at all.
Blessed Be.

So many of the laws are rediculous, and so many are totally unenforceable. I just try to stay under the radar of public officials as much as possible. I vote, then I go home---don't wants to be any sort of public figure at all.
