Do you think organic is better or is it a scam?

I like to use organic when I can. But is it really better for you? I know it sure is costly. I just wandered if there was anyway to prove if an orange or anything else for that matter is really organic. With the way the FDA runs things, I'm not so sure I would go on their word. It's pretty bad when your afraid to even buy dog food. And with all the food scares, I would just as soon buy from the local farmers that I know, but you can't always do that. Any comments or opinions would be great.

This is a difficult complicated question. I don't think there is a clear cut answer, but I'll tell you what I've read on both sides of this issue. Many Organic farmers complain that the FDA has relaxed standards for what can be called "organic" in order to allow mass producers to label some of their product as organic. This could be considered a scam, but it would not be the orginal small scale organic farmers pulling off the scam. Many regular non-organic farmers maintain that all organic farmers produce an inferior product even if it is free of chemicals. As the organic farmers are clear about why their product is different and the consumer is free to choose freely for himself, this is not a scam. So, I'm thinking the small scale organic farmers aren't a scam but some of the large scale are a scam as organic techniques do not lend themselves to mass production. As always, it is buyer beware.

organic is where no pesacides and such are used during farming.. so as long as the land is free from them then it is gorwn organic... i would have to agree that organic is better for us because we are not taking in any chemicals with my fresh food that way. What amuses me the most is that back in the day food was organic then when they introduced these chemicals and .. what i think is called GM food (genetically modified) we payed more for it. now that organic is being introduced again it is even more expensive than GM foods! Hey, you could always use your backgarden and grow some of your own veg ^_^ that way you know exactly where is comes from lol.

Organic food is surley better as it is free from pesticides.but it is not quite popular among farmers nowdays. Recenly wheat was harvested and my husband tried to get in to contact with several persons trying to find wheat that had been grown without pesticides. He coundn't find one becuase farmers are not willing to do wihtout pesticides. It demands a lot of care and effort which they are no longer willing to put in.

I have often wondered about that, and unless something is grown in a green house how can it be classified as organic. My understanding of organic is no pesticides and no fertilizer, or may that is no chemical fertilizers. any how if you are growing organic corn in a field and have used no sprays etc, and the farmer in the next field does use chemical sprays there is noting stopping the spray from blowing over your field, even the big greenhouses have their windows open to vent in the air, so I can't see how any thing could be called organic, either. Good post Robin

Thanks, you are right about that. We went to an organic store and they wanted something like almost 2 dollars for a lemon, that is outrageous. And theres no prove that it is actually organic. They could be selling a regular pesticide lemon for organic.

I have organic local fruit and veg delivered to my door but I'm in the UK and we have the Soil Association who passes the food as well as the Organic Food Federation. I'm not sure that it is better for you or that it tastes better, I do believe that locally grown, seasonal food is better though.

I grow organically but don't buy much organic. You don't know if it was really grown organically. I am not sure what the government requires someone to show they are organic. I have read enough studies that suggest organic taste better and has more nutrients than chemically grown, I don't know if it is enough to tell a difference though.

In my opinion, I think that organic foods are always a good choice. They are healthy to eat than anything that's processed or frozen. I don't really know how to define organic but I think the meaning is food that hasn't been through a factory. Maybe that only explains wholesome foods, but organic foods can just be as healthy. I don't believe it's a scam, but it definitely is more expensive. Organic milk costs more than regular whole milk.

im not to fussed on it all, but i think that it is better for you. i know it is costly, but its all depends on how much money i have at the time to what i buy. sometimes the food that in shop looks really plays apart on it.

Organic foods are becoming a big thing now. I do think that they are better for you in the long run because the chemicals being used are starting to interfere with our own growth and development and we have to stop this dangerous situation. For example, the growth hormones used on animals for so long may be what is responsible for the earlier development of puberty in children - kids as early as 9-years old are now becoming more common-place in beginning puberty. I do not believe that all of a sudden there is this huge increase in availability of organic foods. One grocery store by me all of a sudden has a big organic selection - how can you increase a supply like this all of a sudden? Another reason I wonder is that I used to frequent an organic food market and actually followed the veggie delivery truck from a regular grocery store to the organic market -- same foods, just priced higher at the organic market. How can that be? But, I think the federal reg's have gotten tighter so hopefully this is not going on like it used to.

I asked this same question to my husband about 2 weeks ago. Makes me wish I would have posted it here. LOL He thinks that organic foods are just that...organic. Me, I'm not sure about organic foods, but I think some companies are stricter than others when it comes to organic foods. I can certainly taste the difference with some of these foods. Like when it comes to milk, I like to buy Horizon as it tastes better than some of the other organic brands of milk out there.

I do really like the taste of the Horizon milk, as for the eggs, I buy them off the Amish or Meninites. They are much bigger and taste really good. I used to buy quite a bit organic produce but it's hard for me to believe that it is all truly organic.

I know for a fact that organic is not only better, it's healthier for you. Organic, if it's truly organic, is not grown with chemicals or pesticides that have been proven to cause countless diseases and health problems. Think about how they ate in Biblical days. No chemicals or pesticides. Neither did they have such diseases as we do today. Organic - for me - is the way to go.

I know organic is better, but I think there are companys out there trying to pass off non organic produce to turn a larger profit.

i think organic is much better...the taste difference between organic eggs and the other type(sorry can't bring myself to say it)is like night and day....i only buy organic free range eggs now....yes...they are more expensive ,but the taste difference is reward enough for them being dearer. i try and buy organic fruit and veg as well when i can.

Frankly, I don't buy organic because it is loosely translated by merchandisers. Like you, I would prefer to buy from local farmers and that's exactly what we should be doing. Unfortunately, the one local farm that was convenient, shut down a while back and I would have to travel a good hour out of my way to find another one. I stick with just regular fruits and veggies and wash them carefully before consumption.
