How many of you are annoyed by telemarketers? I'm sure I'll get a unanimous hands up. I find these calls invasive and timewasting. My father, at 93, receives regular faxes offering him holidays at island resorts!
For the Aussies here I have a link so you can register online so as not to receive these calls:
www.donotcall.gov.au
It's a government initiative.

I didn't know they had this in other countries too. I've been on the one for the US for a couple years now and love it - I very very seldom get any calls. You can also put cell phone numbers on a do not call list https://www.donotcall.gov/default.aspx

Your welcome! I encourage everyone to get on the list for their country - it really does work.

I always feel I have to say something. I say stuff like, "Sorry, I left to go on holidays yesterday", or,
"Sorry, I'm too sick to answer the phone" or, "Sorry, there's no-one living at this address."
A bit silly, but they can't think of a comeback quickly enough and that's when I hang up. LOL.

Hello, mstickle, thank you for the information, i may be a good news fo us. Luckily i do not always received those calls from the telemarketers, but it may be good not to receive any at all.
If everyone registered for it,so will the people who work in the telemarketing industry lose their jobs?

I think that I can help in this matter as well, see i used to be a telemarketer myself. There are a few easy steps you can use to get us quickly and quietly off of the phone and not hear from us again. When you are a telemarketer you have to follow a strict guideline, and cannot stray away from that unless you get a few exact responses. ( I hated it, I almost lost my job because i was too nice to the customers. Finally I quit!!) Here's what you do:
The telemarketer calls you and says may i speak to so and so, you say yes this is mr/ms/mrs so and so. They tell you why and who they're calling for, and what its about. You simply say mam/sir I would like to know what telemarketing company that you work for? They will tell you they are calling from/for your electric/ water/ or etc, simply say no i mean the what is the name of your telemarketing company and where are you calling from. They will then tell you sitel, telecom, etc. When they do, simply ask them one simple thing. May I please be placed on your DO NOT CALL LIST for sitel/telecom/etc, and for the electric/water/ etc. They will then place you on what is called a company do not call list and a telemarketing do not call list. When they do this it automattically boots your number from the system, or its supposed to. Take it from me, after hearing your heartwarming stories and you anger I want to help you get rid of the telemarketers. I know that everyone has to have a job, but you also have a right to say no and not have to say it again

Well, sometimes I used to be annoyed by them. But by now, they don't call me anymore. No telemarkers, for a long time. Only for my mother, and even though it is rarely.
What the f... I didn't know they called people 93 years old. That's really strange. I hope they really stop bothering you, since you joined that website (I think you did, didn't you?).

I hate telemarketers. They are so annoying. I haven't had any luck with the do not registery, as I still get them. What I have done a couple of times, is say, just a minute, I'll get them, and leave them on hold. That has helped some what. They are invasive and intrusive.

I hate telemarketers with a passion! For a while after we moved our phone was mercifully quiet, then of course they found our number and like a swarm of angry bees, the calls started.
It got so bad at one bit that now, if I don't recognize the phone number when the phone rings, I refuse to pick it up. My partner always calls me on my cell phone, and my parents always tell me roughly what time they're going to call me.
That way I know whether or not to pick the phone up.

They are very annoying. I got on the do not call list in the US, but I still get some calls, and anyway, charities can still call. Fortunately, I have caller ID, so if I don't recognize the number, I just don't pick up.

Telemarketers are invasive, I do receive an average 2 calls a week offering me banking services to personal finances. I find them very irritating when you are in middle of a meeting and you received their call without any caller ID displaced.
But on the other hand, I do pity the telemarketer as well, they are trying to make a living as well, I will try to tell them nicely that I am not interested in their service, and unless they are pushy, I will tell them off.
In my country, they do not have a government initiative to stop them from calling. Sad....

Hi tickle. I just signed up for this today. I was reading a news item on msn about it and was straight away on the site. Very easy too. Apparently charities can still ring though. I havent had many from them lately. I think it is great you have let others know through here, and it is good seeing others saying that it is in other countries as well.
Best wishes

Yes, I am annoyed and frustraited. Being in Australia where its cheaper for companies to outsource, the callers are usually from non-english speaking countries which makes it even harder and annoying when you try to make an effort to listen and understand them. At times they have no respect for at all when you tell them your not interested. I should check out list since I am aussie. Never knew such an initiative existed. Cheers.

We rang up the Telephone company and asked not to have these calls any more and well when we get the odd one - we ask who they are and they don't tell us we ask again again :( and then we hang up you can report them :)
Also if you have a small child get them to talk to them - it is so funny - My son was 18 months and babbling for ages to them :)
They didn't find it funny :)

I get so sick and tired of these calls, always just as we are about to sit down to dinner. I have tried to get them stopped but it still goes on. I have taken to saying to them, "hold on a minute" then I put the phone on the desk and leave them hanging on.
