Mmm, Smell That?

I always find it amazing how a smell will trigger a memory, long thought lost. We were visiting my sister-in-laws house earlier today, and when we walked through the front door, we were engulfed by the smell of gingerbread cookies ( my in-law has small children ). I was immediately taken back to my mother's kitchen in Halifax, Canada. I could see her plainly, with those eye glasses with thick rims that were so popular in the 60's, the ever so uncomfortable looking shoes and always present apron. I waited patiently on the kitchen stool, that now resides in my own kitchen today. Waiting with a spatula in my hand, anticipating my oncoming treat. After awhile, sure enough when my mother is done, she turns to me with a knowing smile and says " come on Paul, it's all yours ". I jump down from the stool and practically run to mom, to take the bowl from her hands, and devour every last scrap with the spatula. Totally ignorant to my surroundings... I'm in heaven :-). This memory occurred in a flash, and yet it felt as if time stood still. I blinked and there was my wife smiling at me. She said " Mmm, Smell That?". I smiled back, and said " Yes... I do ".

you are so right. Sometimes a certain smell can give me a feeling of nostalgia. Like a perfume my grandma used to wear. everytime I smell that same scent from someone else, i always have a fleet feeling that my grandma is somewhere near..
