Listening to music in languages you don't understand.

Do you listen to music that's sung in a language you don't understand? Do you think not being able to understand the lyrics prevents you from understanding the mood or meaning of the song? My favorite music is Japanese, but my Japanese is pretty good so I can understand the lyrics well enough. I also listen to Mandarin, Cantonese, and Korean music, neither of which I can understand all (except for the common lyrical phrases, i.e. "I love you"). Personally, I'm open to music in any language and I think the mood of the music and tone of the vocals are enough to get the message of the song across, regardless of whether you understand the language of the lyrics.

My mom listens to Thai music.. My little brother laughs whenever he hears my mom mimicking the lyrics. We don't speak Thai, we're not Thai. But sometimes I think that every country has its own unique tune that once you hear it, you would know at that instant that it is from that country. American music really differs from Japanese and Chinese. Even when you just hum the tunes, you can really tell them apart, even without the lyrics. But I still enjoy those songs that I understand. Because whenever I listen to songs, I always see to it that I can relate to the lyrics.

I have done this before. I have heard several songs that I really liked but haven't a clue as to what they are about. I think you can get a lot out of the music by listening and getting into the flow. Even the lyrics I know the language of are not always easy to understand.

I can listen to music of any language provided it is rythmical. I listen to songs in languages like french or some of my regional languages like bengali. Some songs are really pleasing to the years even if you cant really understand what they mean.

Yes, in fact, I do. Most od sepultura's early stuff was in brazilian. When traveling in quebec, montreal stations sometimes play some decent hard rock in french. I like sampling music from all over the world. I like to here another countries take on my type of music. I dont think the language thing hsa much to do with it. you can get a feeling from a song even if you can't understand the words.

I like to listen to music in Spanish. I have been studying Spanish for quite some time now, but I am definitely not fluent in it. So when I listen to a song in Spanish, I get the general meaning of it, but I do not understand every word. And I don't like every Spanish song; only certain ones. There is one called Al Menos, Ahora, and it is so pretty and I think you would love it even without knowing any Spanish just because of the way it sounds!

I agree with you. Personally I know no French at all, yet enjoy listening to a French singer called Patrick Fiori. I think music communicates with us on many levels, lyrics being only a part. It's nice if you know the language... For an analogy, consider it this way: The music is a language on its own, its alphabet being the notes and it's grammar being the scales, the chords etc... People still get to enjoy music even if they do not know its language. You can appreciate more if you do. Also in movies, there's a lot of stuff happening that we are not completely aware of (did you ever try to count how many 'cuts' there are in scenes, are we conscious of it all the time?), yet we get to enjoy the mood they create. Of course we would appreciate more if we knew the details of film making. The more we know the more we can appreciate. But it is not a barrier, so to speak. Because we can never know it all, and there's always more to explore.

Yes, I listen to music in several languages that I don't speak, like German, Japanese, and Spanish. I can pick out a few words in German, so I can understand bits and pieces of those songs, but I don't know any Japanese and only very basic Spanish. I like this music anyway, because I don't need to understand the lyrics to appreciate the music.

i listen to mandarin songs :D ..especially from the girl group S.H.E ..not sure if you know them or not, but their songs are great! (to me, anyways) ..i haven't got a clue what they're saying because i don't speak nor understand the language, but i love them and their songs! also have been to a couple of their concerts too haha. some ppl think i'm nuts :P ..i love the rhythm and how their song sounds like, and as for their lyrics, i always look it up on the net or on forums, they always have the romanized version of the lyrics, so i could always sing along, although sometimes it might be a challenge to do so haha.. :)

My favorite music is Japanese as well. The fact that I can't understand a lot of it doesn't affect my love of the songs at all. I do try to find translations of the lyrics sometimes, though, not only to help me learn to sing the song, but it also helps me understand more Japanese in general. I like music in basically any language if it is catchy. I have songs I love in Russian, Korean, German, etc~ For some reason though, my dad has a real problem with not being able to understand what he's hearing. Whenever I try to put Japanese music on, he wants me to turn it off. I guess I can't understand this feeling at all u.u;

Yes I listen to a lot of opera which is mostly in Italian and I don't speak that language. The lyrics are just one aspect of music - as you say the music and tone of the singer are also very important in conveying the meaning of the song.

I love listening to European music though I'm from the Philippines. I don't really mind if I don't understand the language but the tone suggests the mood of the song. I especially like Italian, German, Spanish. Sometimes though I listen to Thai songs (which is a real incomprehensible language to me though I live in Thailand) as long as I like the tune. Some of my favorite foreign songs are: Hero in Spanish, Desnudo--I think I just like Enrique. Mas Alla Del Sol by Steve Green, Hast Du Alles Vergasen (sorry for the spelling) by Claudia Jung, Habanera, and mostly all songs for ballroom. I love upbeat rhythm. I also love native songs by Placido Domingo, Jose Careras, Luciano Pavaroti, Andrea Bocceli, Josh Groban, Charlotte Church.

Absolutely!!! Th language has almost nothing to do with the music itself - the tone and the performance makes a song go straight for your heart. In fact just last evening I was watching Eurovision where all countries in Europe compete and most sign in their own language - Serbia won with a beautiful sogn called 'Prayer', which was sung in their language and simply touched the heart of all Europeans whether they understood it or not! I love music - it can get me in a good or sad mood in minutes.

yes, i like listening to spanish, italian, french, arabic, portuguese, and russian music. Even though i am chinese i cannot stand anything sung in any east asian music - i think maybe because i just don't like the tone of voice in the language. The thing about other languages for me is not the words - it is the tone and the accent and way they are sung. That is why i like a lot of the languages i have listed above because they can be sung in a very flowing manner - like - can be made to sound like an instrument in itself. The reason i don't like east asian languages is that each individual words cannot blend into the next one - can only be said distinctly otherwise the meaning changes.
