for pinays out there: is it okay to ask a guy out?

i was raised in california and was never really taught about filipino culture by my parents. recently i met a pinoy at work. he was born and raised in the philippines until he moved to santa clara a few months ago. i am interested in him, but my cousins say that it is not customary for filipinas to ask guys out. and that we should just wait for the men to make the first move. it sounds like BS to me, but i really like this guy and i don't want to blow it by acting too aggressive. need dating advice from pinays out there
