First, I am from China and my Chinese is pretty good:) I am just wondering how many people like to study Chinese as the foreign language. I would like to help.

For people who choose to learn Chinese, they should know that the two main languages/dialects are Cantonese & Mandarin. Further, within each, there are also variations. Adding a curveball into the mix, the Taiwanese who had left China after Mister Chiang lost to Mister Ma also somehow, ended up with their own dialect.
I can actually hear the difference between Mandarin & Cantonese, although I cannot understand. Ironically, I cannot tell the difference between Mandarin & the Korean language, nor can I tell the difference between Cantonese & the Vietnamese language.

I can speak both Cantonese and Mandarin, as I'm from Guangzhou. I still think the best is to learn Mandarin.

Your recommendation of Mandarin has merit in that it is the language spoken by the Chinese government officials, as well as the more widely used language in China.
However, most of the immigrants in the USA & Canada speak Cantonese. Also, Mister Ma was educated in the University of Canton (before it was closed) when he was a young man.
