Need help with this garden

Anybody have any ideas on what I can do with this garden. It is from my house in Crete and as you can see is just baked earth and weeds at the moment. It slopes away for the house to the wall and is about 6m x 15m. I haven't got a clue what to do with it as my gardening experience is limited to the UK and even that is very inexperienced.
Any ideas on what plants I should be looking at or landscaping ideas would be extremely welcome. Hope you can help me.

p.s. Sorry if you have seen this discussion before, but I did not upload the photo on that one, restarted here (about 5 mins later)

I suggest you gravel your garden and have teracotta pots of brightly coloured flowers, at least it will be low maintenance.
Or you could have a swimming pool, great for the hot summers.

Our neighbours have done that and it does look very nice but I was trying to move away from that a little as there is a lot of it about. I know this is probably because it works so well and is low maintenance, but surely there are other things I can do? The swimming pool sounds great though, but very expensive...hmmmm, will have to talk to my wife about that one and see what our finances can stretch to (probably a paddling pool with Buz Lighhtyear on).
