Well, over half of the people on Mylot are from Asia (or so it seems), and for most english is your second language, sometimes you make a lot of mistakes. Not all the Asian people on here make a lot of mistakes, but there are quite a few who do. My question is do you prefer if people correct your mistakes or would you prefer just to figure it out on your own?

Honestly, I feel that it really depends.
For instance, if the mistake made is just a typo or something really insignificant, I believe that there's no more need for a correction from other people because it's highly likely that the person concerned could figure it out for himself/herself.
However, if some are really sticklers for perfect grammar, correct spelling, appropriate punctuation, and whatnot, and they could understandably be easily irked even by minor grammatical mistakes, then I feel that the prudent thing to do is to simply send a private message to the poster concerned.
Anent glaring grammatical errors, on the other hand, I feel that other posters could opt to correct such in a manner that would not, in any way, offend the poster. As much as possible, it should be done in a purely objective manner.
By doing such, it could help other posters who have the same problem to perhaps try to avoid the same mistakes and, hopefully, try to look for ways to widen their grasp of the English language. Consequently, better discussions could perhaps be created by such posters.

It depends on the level of wrong English that you are writing. If you English is so bad that your discussions or replies are just not understandable by people and if someone corrects you for this, you should appreciate it. But if while typing fast you have made some spelling mistakes it should not be pointed out, because if you really know good English then inspite of mistakes you will understand what the person was trying to say. I don't think many people will keep correcting others and spoil the atmosphere here on mylot as we all are just like one big family.

you are very lucky to have people correcting you. some people
laugh in there mind when you are wrong and they dont even bother to correct you and you will keep making the same error. Its good when people correct you.:)
