FARMERS BRANCH, Texas - Voters in this Dallas suburb became the first in the nation Saturday to prohibit landlords from renting to most illegal immigrants. Landords have to verify that you are a citizen or legal immigrant before they can rent an apartment to you. In this suburb if the landlord doesn't comply he/she will be fined $500. If anyone ever asked me to prove citizenship to rent an apartment I would be in trouble as my passport has expired! What is your opinion as showing prove of citizenship to rent an apartment?

If the Feds would actually do something about the illegal immigrant problem, then the bordering states would not need to. I have no problem with immigrants, but let's make it fair. As a U.S. citizen, it will take me 62 years to realize medicare benefits - not 62 seconds! The gov't can find these people. The IRS can find anyone they want to find. An examination of businesses' books can spot irregularities in cash flow (labor costs). Irregularities do not benefit everyone. Immigrants may be abused by the forced low wages, while thier employers may be realizing huge profits made possible by the low wages. In the building business, for instance, who else would benefit besides the builders?

Granted, but I do believe more cooperation - not politics - would be a vast inprovement. Unfortunately, it seems that getting re-elected must be a main objective but it runs interference to service.

The IRS can find discrepancies in labor costs which come from somewhere. If the under-the-table payroll did not exist, there would eventually be no underground payroll, no jobs of the sort, and no reason for the illegal immigrant to be here. That would force changes, resulting in the registration of the labor force. There still could be some supporting unregistered immigrants, but to get the full benefit, they could register - even through the IRS. I think it could be a win-win situation.

If the Feds were stricter with the employers some of the problems would be eliminated. However, the Feds, most of the time, do not do anything to the employers. You are correct the IRS can find people all the time but they are not the ones in charge of finding illegals. INS is swamped with work and apparently cannot do the job of finding illegals by themselves.

All you really need to proof your citizenship is your birth certificat. I think it's a good thing.....but people would really have to know what they are looking at when they are being showed some papers.....because for about $500....many illegals can purchase a drivers license, passport and even a SSC card.

You are correct. In California we have many people that have false documents and it is hard to tell the difference. Thanks for your response. Have a good day.

A applaud the voters in Dallas. I only wish the rest of the country would follow suite. I think that illegal immigrants need to go back to their home countries. There is only so much room in our nation. If you want to live in the United States, I truly think you should come here through the proper channels --legally!

Yes I have proof of citizenship. I have my State Voter's Precinct Card*** and my Naturalization certificate copy. I'm sure you would be very happy to find a nice apartment but were to late to get it as it had been rented to an illegal!!! *** I hope you are aware that you need to be a citizen to vote in the United States or should illegals be allowed to do that as well as all the other criminal acts they perform?

Yes, I am aware that one has to be a Citizen to vote in the USA. Some illegals even have State Voter's Precint Cards that they have bought or stolen. Thanks for your comment.

I would say that even an expired passport shows citizenship..since you could not get the passport in the 1st place if you were not a citizen. I would think a social security card would work too..wouldn;t it?

A Social Security Card doesn't work in some places; however, the Birth Certificate is the best way to prove Citizenship if you were born in USA or one of it's territories. The Immigration Dept. has a card they give people that become citizens of USA. Only the Federal Gov't has the authority to demand prove of Citizenship.

If someone does not have a passport I guess they could show their birth certificate as proof that they are a citizen.

That is the way we do in Puerto Rico, when requested to show prove of citizenship. In Puerto Rico I had to show my birth certificate even to obtain employment.

i dont live in usa. but i think its a good move by the voters in dallas. verification of tenants is in implementation in New Delhi, capital of India. this was introduced due to the threat of cross-border terrorism from pakistan and pakistan occupied kashmir.

Thank you for your response. The people in the area have implemented this ordinance (law) to make sure that illegal people do not rent in their community. However, if someone fights this ordinance they probably will win because the Federal Government is the one the is supposed to insure that people are legal in USA.

That is the way it should be, but many people don't have the money to bribe their government for a legal way to get to the USA.

I think it is a good move but quite harsh. In my appartment, we give reference character and give the address of our former landlord. The owner then checks our rental background and does reference check.

Thanks for your comment. Right now they are getting sued by four civil rights groups. Their argument is that only the Federal Government has the right to ask for proof of citizenship!

Thank you for your comment. Lets see what happens in that neighborhood when someone sues them for discrimination. You see I would be highly offended if someone asked me to prove citizenship to rent an apartment. They will use it as an excuse to discriminate against minority group members. I think the Federal Government is the only one that should be allowed to make those laws.
