A Charity that gives to those in your own backyard..

Another discussion that I read earlier brought to mind an interesting thought. The other discussion was about people's opinions of a well-known charitable organization which is quite popular and advertises regularly, and offers more aid to foreign countries than to its country of origin. This post isn't to bash the original post, but to satisfy my curiosity. While pondering a response, I decided to post my own discussion instead. In your opinion, are people more apt to give to charitable organizations which are in place for those in your own country, or for those abroad? I noticed that we see so many commercials for organizations who give to people in other countries, yet so little for organizations who give to those in our own backyard. Does the prevalence of these commercials mean that people are more apt to look over the ones in one's own country? There are so many people who live well below the government-determined poverty level. I am talking about people who don't have running water in their homes, who go hungry, who don't have electricity, much less an adequate way to heat their homes in the cold winters. These are people who don't own microwaves and iPods, people who don't have a favorite television show, because they don't even own a television. These are children who may have heard of Santa Claus, but wonders why he never seems to stop at their houses on Christmas. I believe in that popular saying, that charity begins at home. The thought that there are people in our own country who don't even have what most of society deems as necessities greatly saddens me. I'm definitely not posting this to push my own agenda. I am merely curious about what others think on this topic. If you make charitable donations, do you give more donations for foreign aid? If so, do you believe that it is because of the unequal ratio of foreign aid advertisements versus domestic ones? Should domestic charitable organizations put out more money for advertising so that they may get more dollars and volunteership to help their efforts? Would it be more advantageous to the organization, thus more beneficial to the recipients of their aid?

AMEN! I completely agree with you. I get so disgusted when I watch telephons to help people in other Countries not because I don't believe they need help, but because we have people in our own Country starving, dying, cant make ends meet, abused, living below poverty, but who helps us NO ONE. When people from other Countries come here they often live better than the average person born here. They get free healthcare, education, food, tax breaks as long as they dont become a citizen. I had a friend from Africa he has been in the United States for over 14 years and he has 2 children, he has 7 associate degrees, does not pay taxes, gets free food healthcare, education, and various other benefits, and he has NEVER worked in his field anywhere he only works 2-3 months out of the year than he goes to school. I went to college I did not finsh because I cannot afford to finish and I only have 1 associates degree. Americans should try to save ourselves first instead of playing worldd police.

I have actually talked about this in a school discussion. I believe that it is wrong to give to others before our own country. I have seen commercials where it shows kids starving and parents barley being able to make it themselves while just outside our windows there are people sleeping on the street because they do not have enough money for anything at all. These kids at least have built a little shelter to help them through while our people could get taken to jail for doing so because it is not their land and they have no right to do so. We should give to our own people and fix our country first. How can we sit there and think that we are wonderful people because we are giving to another country when we arent helping ours. The only people we are impressing is them because they don't know what we are doing to our own people here. I believe that our country is wonderful and I would not want to live anywhere else but why turn and look the other way when someone needs our help here? Why give your money to another country when there is someone right down the street that needs our help?
