My dog has started pooping in the room!

Lately when we leave the house, the dog will take the opportunity to poop in my little girls room. I take him out frequently, but he "saves" it for later to "pay us back" for leaving him! This is so aggravating! He knows that he is in trouble when we get home, and hides in his bed for hours afterwards...but why is he doing this? DO you have trouble with your dogs doing this?

did her mattress come to you second hand or her carpet? could be another dog had done the same thing and the scent lingers enough for your pet to sense it? solution.. I put my 1 dog that wouldn't mind relieving herself in the house should we be gone too long, in the bathroom when we leave (it is the only room without carpet) and I lay newspaper in the shower, those times that she couldn't wait she has gone into the shower on the newspaper (never on the floor) I also put a baby gate up in the door way as the cat would open the door and let the dog escape! could you chain your dog outside when you go out for a bit?

Unfortunately, I can't tie him up as we live in the country and there are coyotes in the area. I guess that I am just going to have to be a little more patient with him while he sniffs and sniffs and sniffs and sniffs...you get the idea! Thanks for the response! Giving you a plus...along with everyone else who posted on this question!

I agree with the response above mine, your dog is probably nervous. How long have you had her? How old is he? I am wondering if he gets nervous that you won't be coming back or something. I would try getting him acclimated to a crate. Maybe it would make him feel safer while you are out! My brother has a dog and they used to close him in the crate when they left the house, but now the dog is very comfortable in it, so they leave the door open and when they leave he still likes to go in there and sleep til they get back.

He is about 6 as far as we can tell, he is getting a little gray though and may be older. We got him from the humane society when the kids were in kindergarten...so we have had him for 3 years. He has been the perfect dog until this, so something is definitely getting to him! Maybe we need a doggy pyschologist!

My dog TaTa would do this when we first got her. The vet explained that she was stressed because we had left home without her. She suggested that we try a couple of things to help destress TaTa. The first thing you can try is to her a safe place, such as a crate that she can stay in while you are gone. The other thing the she suggested was to give her her own special room that she stays in while we are away. In both places you leave her some food and water. We started giving TaTa her own special room. The first couple of days she had a few accidents but after that it has been smooth sailing.

I also think that it is stress because you are leaving the dog at home. My dog does this also, so I started putting a puppy training pad in front of the door. It is like he sits there and wonders and wonders when we will get home, and he has an accident. I talked to my vet and he is the one who suggested using the training pad. The accidents don't seem to come as often now, but once I get home he is ready to go out!! I also try to talk to him and tell him that I will be back soon, and to be a good boy and no messes on the floor. I don't think that he understands a word of it, but he looks in my eyes and acts as if he does. Some days are better than others, and yes sometimes I also feel like he does this as revenge, but I really don't think that dogs are capable of this.

We used a rolled up newspaper and hit her nose a few times and then put her outside. After a while, she go the message.

I don't think the dog is really capable of that mental thought--pay back. Try to walk your dog, my dogs have a hard time going more then 3/4 mile before pooping. If you do this before leaving the house, your dog should be good for hours. Feed the dog, then wait a bit..my older guy is a very short bit, but then take them for a walk and out it will come.

Before we moved and right after we did too in our new house, my little dog would poop and pee in the house. She DIDNT care and didnt care that she had JUST gone. She didnt. It took her a good month or more to stop doing this all the time. Now she does it, but rarely if not let outside. Not like before. I think it was nerves. Is there something that is making your dog upset? My dog did it when we left her because of the new house we had to guess it made her nervous to be alone thinking we would leave her. Dont punish him after the deed forgotten cause they dont have memories. Defently use pet spray to clean it up. If you cant figure it out, ask your vet maybe. Good luck!

He's not doing it as pay back - he's doing because when he actually needs to go, you're not there to take him out - he wont go when you take him outside unless he needs to. You need to make sure you don't allow him to be in those bedrooms - shut all the doors to the rooms he's not allowed in to while you're away. I have never had this problem with my dogs but a quick solution is to either shut him in your laundry while you're gone so he cant do any business throughout the house & make sure you have newspaper down for him. If you make sure he knows he can do his business on the paper while you're away, he will learn to do it there. If you don't want him locked away while your out then you have to make sure all the bedroom doors are shut & have some newspaper put down by the back door so if he goes there waiting to be let out, he'll do his business there instead. Good luck with that just don't stick his nose in it as some people do as you'll damage his sensitive sense of smell!

Sounds like he is mad at you! Does he like to go in the car? Maybe you could take him for a short ride from time to time. I'd shut my bedroom door yoo so he cant get in. Maybe take him on a walk before you go. But hes not happy right now!

It sounds like maybe hes jealous of your little girl, because she gets to go with you, but he doesn't. I have two cats, but no dogs, I do want one just cant have one where I live at right now.

I suggest you to collect its manure and put it at a certain place, it will make him know where he can poop.

my dog started doing that too. he started acting up when i got pregnant and it got so bad we got rid of him. i would only leave him a few min to go get the mail and would come back to a nice pile of poop. or he would pee on stuff right in front of us even if he'd just been out. now we are having problems with our newest dog. she is used to being in her crate when we leave...ever since we got her fixed, she freaks out in her cage. we came home to find it all bend to heck. its a metal cage, she was pulling at it with her teeth and had it all bent up. i'm starting to think we're crazy for getting a dog. lol
