So as some of you know, my neice ran away last Friday (still no word as of this morning)...well I was talkin to her mum this morning and she informed me that accordign to a cop she dealt with...If her daughter is found in someone elses home, neither the cops nor my gf can make her leave! Apparently, if my gf were to go in a force her to come home my GF could be charged with "Forcible Confinement"!! Thats for ages between 14 and 16...can you believe that!? I was so shocked!!
I was also shocked to learn that in Ontario (dunno about other provinces)...the police only get involved right away with a run away child IF the child is living at home....if a child is living in Foster Care/Group Home/etc etc they DONT generally get involved because "those kids run away all the time" I couldnt believe that one either!!
What are some ridiculously unfair laws in your area that you are aware of?

OMG!! I can't believe that! I don't think her in the states we have that law - although I can't say for sure!
I'm sorry I haven't been on her much lately...I hope she's home though now. Or at least you guys know where she safely is.

We don't have these problems in india because over here no one follows such ridiculous rules. If teenagers were left on their own they would grow up to be very irresponsible indeed.

I don't know of any ridiculous laws in my town but I am sure that is just because I have not been made aware of them yet.
As for your neice I hope that they find her soon. And you are right that is the most ridiculous law. I can tell you if it were my child I don't foresee this law stopping me from going in and getting my son. That is just stupid that noone can make her leave. It makes no sense to me in the least.

The laws are really stupid and they are the same over here more or less. it is like as a parent u have no rights at all. However u are responsible for the kid, but you can not help unless they want you too. it is just really stupid.
I really hope that she will be back soon and learn from this experiance even though the chanses are big that she will do the same again since the law is not stopping her.

a country need rules to maintain its members in order.so i can see the rules in your country is out to children under 16 years old.also a nation requires laws to preserve peace,if there were no law, every man would become thief,a robber,or a murderer.life and property are always in danger.when people fight ,no one stops them.so a nation must be have a laws to stop those crime.

It's a very difficult situation with teenage 'rebels'. my sister in law went completely nuts during her teens and her parents literally couldn't control her.
She started to get violent toward her mother and sister, so they decided she would have to go into care. The stupid thing was that they wouldn't take her into care because SHE wasn't in danger. She had chased her own mother with a knife!, but because she wasn't being abused in any way, nothing could be done.
I may sound like an old hard-liner, but I'm sure some of these kids would have benefitted greatly from a smack or two to put them in their place.

wow thats really shocking, but I guess it works for them. i don't care if the child is in a group home or foster care, they sould get involed with each run away. I used to live in texas and I once hread that if I was to run away, and go to a friends house. My parents chold not take me from there, Juat like the law were u live. Its totalley stupid.

That was not the case for me when I ran away at the age of 15. I was found in a friend's house and the police came in a got me. They took me outside searched and handcuffed me, then they proceeded to take me to juvie hall. I was lucky that my aunt and mother saw me in the back of the car and came and got me before I even got locked up. I may not have thought that this rule was fair when I was 15 but I think it is now. If your child is at someone else's home you as a parent should have the right to make them come home. This is my humble opinon anyway.

That really is outrageous. My child is MY child until the age of 18 and I'll be damned if anyone thinks they can have a say in where she belongs. That really frustrates me! I hope that your niece is returned home safely, my heart aches for you.
