Too many discussion about the distribution of Linux, everybody should have their own feeling about the distribution.
Now let's list some great applications in Linux, for example, something MS windows does not have or much powerful than that in MS windows, or even compariable good to the general MS applications.
I will begin with my short list.
vim ----- editor I love so much
firefox ----- browser, also aviable for MS windows
thunderbid----- mail client
screen ----- very useful application for remote
monitor of processings on server.
gimp ----- free graphic application like Photoshop
mc ----- Midnight commander
kdict ----- free online directory
plan ----- simple schedule book
gaim ----- manager for many IM
this is what just in my mind now. Try to list your applications for Linux user.

Well I have seen that many of the applications you have mentioned do have different MS Windows equivalents, many which are, by the way, better. Here are some linux applications which have NO comparison whatsoever in MS Windows.
deMon2K - Quantum chemistry DFT simulations program
molden - quantum chemistry calculation visualization software
cuteMol - Quality publication like images for molecules
eclipse trader - Free stock analysis software (there are lots of these programs for windows but none of the free ones have a glimpse of the functionality of Eclipse Trader)

Browser: Galeon, Epiphany
Editor: Kate, Gedit
Office Suite: K-Office
These are I feel programs found only on Linux, which are better than their Windows counterparts ( However, Powerpoint is better than K-presenter)
