Why are most pencils hexagonal?

I believe it is so when you put a pencil down it doesn't roll off the desk and onto the floor only to be swallowed up in a tidal wave of grief that your pencil hit the floor.

There are octagonal pencils too... and I dont think anyone knows because the original pencil was a stick

Yes you are right, there are octagonal pencils too. Pencils come in round shape as well. But the most common is the hexagonal pencil.
