Do you know what music you like or are you a "top 40" person?

I definitely am not a top 40 person, I know exactly what music I like and that's what's always in my mp3, every now and then I discover something new, that I fall in love with, and that is added to my playlist. Of course every now and then I do like the song that is currently popular and that everyone is listening to. But I guess most people out there are "top 40" people, they keep listening to what's on the charts, as long as it's on the charts, and get those CDs but then after it's died down, those CDs just gather dust, and to tell you the truth most pop songs are only good while they're popular, but that's just my opinion. For me, if I like a song, it doesn't matter how old it is, or how much or how less popular the artist or band is. It's all about the music. So what kind are you? Do you have your favorites? Or do you just listen to what's on the charts?

I´m a discovery man, and i believe that in my listening habits, i don´t listen to any top. Well, i don´t know what is on the tops, since i mainly listen to independent artists, and i mainly find their works at OMD´S (Online Music Distributors) like Artistlaunch.com, Scrubrecords, Sellaband and so many other sites alike. And i must say that was an important measure in the change of my life, more precisely in the soundtrack of my life :)

Cool answer man... so you're a discovery man.. I've discovered some good bands too, virtually unheard of, at least by me and people I know, but I don't think I've listened to enough of those to call myself a discovery woman yet, but I'm getting there..

I think most songs that are popular while they are popular will still hold appeal for those who liked them originally. I go in spurts to what I listen to, and I do enjoy listening to what is new and seeing what gems can be found. I was more of a listen to what is on all the time when I was younger than I am now. Now I listen more to favorites than I do anything else, but while I am not a top 40 listener I do listen to the radio on the computer I seem to live in a radio black hole where the stations don't play well where I am at, so I got out of the habit of having a radio on 24/7 However I do have many songs on my computer, old favorites some from before I was born but had listened to as a kid because they were old favorites of family members, some from when I was a kid, which means there is not only the 40 years worth of music I listened to but also a few decades from before I was born as well. This gives me hundreds of songs thousands on my computer actually that I just load and play randomly often I don't get to the songs that are most favorite because I will run out of time. I just then pick up where I left off the next time I listen. But I also have mood music, that is music and songs that are favorites that I know match different moods I am in, and I will play those songs. It is still good to listen to songs that are popular and yes some are songs I enjoyed more back when, rather than now. But I have still listen to them anyway. Since we listened to the radio more than we bought albums, now CD's, those albums, and yes I still play and listen to vinyl, tapes, or Cd's that I bought I really do listen to.

Yeah, well, I've got favorites that were way before I was born as well. It's just the discovery of these songs that's the hard part. But if you go digging, you find some great music in the archives, sometimes better than anything that's popular today...

Wow, "tin pan alley", I'd never heard of that. That's cool! Yeah, I know what you're talking about, there are so many songs I know the words to, and I can sing along to , but I don't know who they're from, it's just that I've heard them in some movie or something, the classics, you know.

Well it was easy for me, I didn't have to do a lot of digging, since my mom and uncle played oldies a lot so I grew up hearing it. On top of that I had watched enough old movies to be exposed to some of the older stuff, such as Red Nichols, Glen Miller, an other big band songs. As well as watching some of the old movies that were about the composers from the time of the popularity of Tin Pan Alley. If you are not familiar with that term, Tin Pan Ally was an alley in New York City, that had many offices of those who were in the music industry from the turn of the last century. Late 1800's to early 1900's. Before radio and records were big people would purchase sheet music of popular songs sung by those who performed them on stage for vaudville and other musicals. Finding music from the old musicals is a great find. Sigmund Romberg, Gilbert and Sullivan, Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein, Richard Rogers and Lorenz Hart, Bert Kalmer and Harry Ruby, Gus Kahn, If you are not familiar with their music, you may want to check it out, there are so many songs we know of kind, because they are timeless, that we don't even realize we know them.

To be frank, the majority of the 40 sucks big time, there is nothing decent there, with remixes, sampling of old songs and more bloody cover versions...it seems these days that bands do not know what originality is...and the sad fact is that a lot of the peiople who listen to it do not realise it is not original. I know what I like (as you can more than likely tell) and I do listen al most genres of music (I have liteally thousands of CDs ranging from Amadeus to ZZ Top quite literally) and it depends what my mood is as to what I listen to...but I always listen to heavy metal to go to sleep!

Ah well, you said it for me, I didn't wanna come right out and say that most of the time the top 40 really sucks!! but it does. Nothing like a good heavy metal to put you to sleep, I seem to have done that myself...

If you heard the music on my PSP then you'd see I have quite a varied taste. I'm currently listening to Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells and a load of tracks by German industrial metal group Rammstien, and last week I have The Rasmus, The Darkness, De La Soul, Eminem and loads of other stuff. Maybe if there was more original stuff in the charts I'd like it more...doubt it but you never know!

I love country music and to me that is funny because I use to hate it while I was growing up1 My sister and I would make fun of our parents. They use to have a license plate on the front of their car that said "if it ain't country it ain't music" so whenever my sis or I used their car we would turn the plate upside down so it was harder to read. LOL! I also love classic rock but country is my top choice today1

Well, good for you. I mean we all like music we like and there's nothing anyone can do about it. It's all about choice.

Actually bands I listen to are almost never on the top 40 , or top anything . I love heavy metal , I love the sound of the guitar ! Songs on my Ipod include Motorhead , Motley Crue , lot's of Iron Maiden , Deep Purple , Kiss , Def Leppard (which Im listening to as Im typing this) , Judas Priest , Megadeth , Ministry , System of a Down , Saliva and various others . It also depends on where I am , when Im driving I prefer HEAVY rock , plus some fast rhythme dance songs like , U2 Tribal Dance , Let's go , Rockstar , Dancing with an angel . Some of these are new and some are old , some are extremely old like Boys by Sabrina which always makes my heart beat and makes me floor the gas pedal .

I guess Def Leppard and Iron Maiden have been in the top 40, but those would be the one of the good top 40s, the one I would like to listen to. The best music is always the one that you discover through friend or through some searching of your own. Top 40s is just popular music, the best music is found in the most unlikely of places.

I like Rock and Metal and some alternative rock as well. My fav are Metallica, AC/DC, LimpBizkit and many more. I do like some other kinds of music and i also love 2 see what's on the top 10 or 40 and that doesn't contradict with me being a metal man.

Sure I love to see what's on top as well, but mostly it's none of the stuff that I think should be in the top 40. But doesn't hurt to check..

I have to say I have never been a top 40 person. If I hear a song and like it, I try to get it. Half the time I don't even now what a song is caled or who it is sung by, I just enjoy the song. I have some favourites and they are all different, some of my favourites I can think of are 'misery' Soul Asylum 'Little wonders' Rob Thomas 'Nothing Man' Pearl Jam 'Behind Blue eyes' Limp bizkit 'Because of you' Kelly Clarkson 'Don't tell me' Avril Lavigne 'Here without you' Three doors down 'Stuck in a moment' U2 'Im not crazy' Mathbox 20 'Kill me' 30 seconds to Mars 'Father and son' 'American Pie' There is more but I can't think of them of the top of my head. I do like some of the new songs that come out but I still like them when they are no longer new, not just cos they are popular at the time. The artists I like Alanis Morrisete, Matchbox 20, Live, Corrs, Avil lavigne,REM,U2,Cold chisel, Kiss, Shania twain, Nickleback, Celine dion, roxette, kylie minogue, the list goes on.

yeah, the list does go on, in most cases. I do like your playlist, especially "stuck in a moment" by U2, that's awesome!

I suppose I am a 'top 40' person. Although, it tends to be influenced by my children and my husband rather than the actual 'top 40'. There seem to be a lot of songs recently that are just oldies revamped and then I like to dig out the old version again. At Christmas we got a record player that allows us to put our LPs onto the computer. That is great. Now I can listen to my old records again. When the children leave their music channels on the TV I get to like the ones they listen to and some of the groups they have bought the CDs for have grown on me. We influenced them in their choice of what music was good and now they share new ones they find with us. Isn't it nice that they haven't rebelled and want to share!

Yeah, that is nice, as usually parents and kids seem to be poles apart when it comes to music preferences..

I am also not a top 40 person, but I will listen to pretty much anything that isn't top 40/pop music. I prefer finding less known bands, and I listen to a lot of goth and metal. Some of the bands I like are becoming more mainstream, and might become top 40 bands, but I certainly don't look to the top 40 to find music that I will like.

Yeah, and I've actually found less known bands with much much better music than what makes it into the top 40...

I do listen to the "Top 40" stations from time to time, because I always worry that I'm going to miss someone fantastic because I'm being a snob about *not* listenting to them! But for the most part I don't. I love a wide variety of genres and artists, though. I constantly search for new things to add to my collection. Some of my favorites are Wynton Marsalis, Keb' Mo', Taj Mahal, Buckwheat Zydeco, Lou Reed, Oingo Boingo, and WookieFoot. My "favorite songs" playlist is 556 MB, though. I love music!

Yeah, sure, I do know what's in the charts too. It's not like I'm against the top 40 or people who listen to it. I just don't like it when people say, how come you always listen to the same stuff all the time? Duh! Because I like it, and I know what I like, and my taste in music doesn't change each week with the top 40. But that being said, there is some good music that does make it to the top. I almost always like what JT has in there, but my favorite bands or artists or songs are those that haven't really made it to the top but are definitely better than most music on the charts. Again, I haven't heard any of those bands you mentioned, but they do sound interesting, and I always like discovering music I haven't heard.
