In restaurants, do you sit side by side with your partner or across each other?

..Or is this unethical in some countries? Before, when I was single, I never really get it why some couples have to sit side by side. I mean, I always wanted elbow room when I eat, but I guess me and my boyfriend are just the cuddly type. We always want to be close with each other which is hard since in some restaurants, we have to sit in tables for four to be able to sit side by side. Do you also do this? Is this against table manners or something?

I know couples like to sit next to each other so that they can do funny things. But if it is just friends, I would rather sit opposite. It is much easier to talk this way - rather than twisting your neck so uncomfortably.

We really don't have a problem talking. I don't know, maybe with time, we just got used to twisting our heads. LOL.

We always sit across from eachother. I think it is so much nicer to be able to look him in the eye when we talk.

I've never done that. For me, it's more fun to cuddle. LOL.

LOL cute question. We're old married folk so we sit across from each other. To add to the problem I am left handed so always poking at him if we are sitting in a tight booth situation. I admire those that still sit next to each other. I always assume they are NOT married. They are either dating or cheating. LOL.

LOL. I have the same concept with old couples who still hold hands. Either they're still dating or cheating. LOLz.

When I used to take my ex out for dinner I'd always without fail sit accross from her, but this was quite simply because I wanted to look into her eyes, which were like sparkling jewels. Damn, how soppy is that?

I like to sit side by side but he likes to sit across each other. I asked him why does he like to sit across, he said it is because he wants more interaction, like talking and seeing faces. Besides, he has a bigger room to eat if we are not sitting side by side.

Well, you can also interact when sitting side by side. I can actually put my head on his shoulder while waiting for the food.

Hi natalie1981! I too prefer to sit beside my partner. We talk a lot of sweet nothings and feed each other while in a Restaurent. I have not cared for the World. I feel good when i am able to touch him.

Yeah. I've gotten used to sitting next to him that when we're sitting across each other, I always feel like something's missing.

I have never personally known it to be against table manners, but I could be wrong. For my wife and I, it depends. Sometimes, we like to sit next to each other at the table, especially when we have a booth, but there are other times when we know we should probably be across from each other for room or other considerations. We usually see how it is when we get to the restaurant. If we have a regular table, not a booth, then we'll usually sit across from each other.

Yes, my boyfriend and i always prefer booths when dining out. We would make a special request to the waiters to sit us in booth.

I prefer to sit opposite. I like to look straight at a person. Having to turn my head to speak with them is awkward.

I can't sit across from some one and look them in the eye, it makes it very awkward to lie to them and if I tell them the truth they will not pick up the check.

We sit side by side occasionally, but usually we sit with the kids next to us and across from each other. I like it because it's easier to see my hubby when we talk and what not. I dated a guy for awhile though, that "required" me to sit next to him, he thought any couple that sat across from each other was doomed to end. Weird huh?!

LOL. My boyfriend doesn't "require" but he sorta insists. If I'm a little mad at him, I try to sit across from him and he makes this pouting face and he's the one who moves his chair.

I sit across from the person. I feel too crowded sitting next to the person.

I feel that way sometimes but my boyfriend insists that we sit side by side and I really feel more secure when I'm beside him.

This is an interesting discussion. Thinking about it now, it seems that we prefer to sit across each other. That way we could better communicate. Nonetheless, when i'm mad at my husband, Id often sit beside him, so he wont have to see my facial expression the entire time we're eating.

LOL. We're the exact opposite. When I'm mad at my boyfriend I sit across from him coz I don't want him near me. LOL.

My wife sits next to me when we eat, she says she can't stand to watch me eat. I told that it was her problem, what does she expect when she married a pig.

When i go out to dinner with my boyfriend we usually sit across from each other but i guess it depends where you go. In most places if you ask for a table for two you get one with seats facing each other. I would probably sit beside him if i didn't feel awkward about other people watching or me getting in their way.

I think sitting across facing each other would be the right position. Perhaps it will also go with good manners also. Sitting side by side may be OK sometime...you may feel the closeness of your partner, but in comparison of this position when you are facing each other...you can very well see each other's expressions and gesture and can judge the reaction of your partner. I would like to sit across the table...I find it a better position than sitting side by side.

We sit across each others... its because we just feel comfortable seeing each others...while eating hehehe I cant see his face fully when he's sitting beside me. But I think there is nothing wrong sitting anywhere you want as long as you're sitting on the chair. lolz!

Before and after my husband and I had kids we would sit across from each other at the table, unless of course we happened to be visiting some of our other family members that we planned to meet at a restaurant...then and only then have we sat right next to each other. My husband and I find it easier to sit across from each other so we can converse and at the same time not have to fight for elbow room.

Well it depends on what mood i am if it is a romantic mood then i would definately sit side by side if it is a personal outing and if it is an occasion or a professional dinner then ofcourse across the table as far as table manners is concerned there is nothing against sitting side by side written in the books it is perfectly all right so don't worry and cuddle up with ur Boy Friend and enjoy ur dinner and also remember we are patrons of that restaurant which means we pay so we are the kings and a king does not need permission so enjoy

Hello Natalie1981, when we sit in a restaurant, we usually sit across each other. It more practical this way and make eating and talking more easy.
