Does anyone else have "confused" pets?

Ok, I buy 3 - 25lb. bags of food for my pets. Cat food for the cats, Puppy Chow for the puppies and Dog food (weight formula) for my pudgy little lab who eats too much!
Can you guess who eats what? Well your guess is as good as mine anymore! LOL My dogs all eat the cat food. The cats prefer the puppy food. And evidently "diet dog food" is just as non-tasty as "diet human food" because nobody eats that unless I mix it with water and garlic.
Do your animals eat the "wrong" species foods too or am I just lucky enough to collect all the whacked out animals?

OMG... the tissue thing is unreal! My one dog used to literally run when he heard you blow your nose like you were preparing snacks for him! LMAO OMG... I cannot believe that I'm not alone with this! LOL I feel so much better knowing that I have "normally" whacked out animals!

My pets are really confused on a larger level than just the food. My cat and dog with eat each others food and anything else. The other things they are confused about is the fact the dog thinks it is a cat. It's best friends with cats and does not like dogs. Both the dog and cat have tried to begin a romantic relationship with each other, cat is a boy and dog is a girl.

ROFL.... well if it helps any my one mixed lab used to constantly try to "mate" with the cats! LOL Must be a genetic disorder they're born with. Eat cat food, ride the cat, bark like a dog?

Well our dogs will eat anything, dog food, cat food, food on the counter, food in your hands, well needless to say we have 10 dogs currently so we have moved them to a pen outside so we can have food to eat. Our cats have the life of luxury, they have wet food in their special bowls and a feeder for their dry and one for their water and an automatic cat box that cleans itself, I always say when I die I want to come live at my house :)

We had this issue as well believe me. They seem to eat what they want no matter what we buy. We finally gave up fighting them. We buy dry cat food, 3 bags of it for the month. We buy 30 cans of wet dog food for the month. We have a bowl of dry down all day and night. The other bowl we mix with dry and a can for the dog, who shares it with the cats. She does great on it and seems to like it better then the dog food. She's a collie with a small beak and so many of the dog foods are too big for her to eat comfortably so she prefers the cat food. It works great for us and them so why fight it?

My biggest worry is that it's not "good for them" to keep doing it though. I wouldn't fight it if I knew it was safe but the lab is getting pudgy from eating the cat food which is so much higher then dog food in calorie content. But I think you're right... I'm going to spend less time worrying about it because obviously they're fine. LOL

Well my dog doesn't seem to be effected by the calorie content at all. She's about normal for what she should be. They all seem to do well on it and so long as it's working I'm not going to worry.

No, you are not alone! I have 2 daschunds who will beg and plead to eat the cat food! So, when I feed them all I have to make sure that I keep them seperated or they will eat all the cat food and not touch their own. I am not sure, but it seems like the cat food is not good for dogs to eat, so I am very dilligent about it now that I know this is what they are doing.
My 2 dogs and 1 inside cat are confused about sleeping arrangements, too. They all huddle together in the dog bed under a blanket when we are not home. Everyone laughs because they believe that dogs and cats should be sworn enemies, but not my three. Now, the stray cats outside are fair game for the doggies, or so they think. As soon as they go outside they have to chase them all away from the porch and the front of the house. I don't know why they get along with one and not the others. Maybe because they have been in the house together or something.

Isn't it funny how when an animal is raised with another they tend to just accept it? Sure says a lot about species and perhaps we humans could learn from them!

I agree with that! If humans could accept each other without worrying about religion, race, financial situations, and so on, we would live in a better world.

no its not just you! my dad went out and got expensive puppy food. i mean it had everything in it that a puppy needs to grow. and we had gotten a cat around the same time. we were also feeding them in the same place and the dog was eating the cat food. so we just started feeding them in different spots and it seemed to work. maybe you can try that?

Been there, done that... the cat fights and beats the puppies to the pen that they have their food in and the puppies don't really care as they prefer the cat food anyways. LOL I think I'd be better off to just keep buying my 3 bags and replacing them when used up and not even think about who ate what! LOL

I think that you are lucky enough to collect all the whacked out animals. The foods your animals eats of each other shows that there habits haven mixed together. You should saparate them and also you self.... LOL because I have started thinking about you & yours eating...
NO hard feelings... just ...

So what you're saying is you're glad you have no animals as they'd probably be as ignorant as you? Good point. I agree. You're ignorant enough for the world, wouldn't want to bring animals into your world would we?

That is too funny- My dogs would eat anything I put in front of them within reason- even cat poo. YUK! They get that from the yard. I don’t try to let them eat cat food but they will if they can. My cat is an indoors cat and the only food she can get to is her food. She is weird though- because at times I’ll give her milk and she doesn’t really lap it up- sometimes she even turns her nose up at it- but she loves to sneak ice cream from my bowl when I’m not paying attention! Cute animals!

My cat thinks she's a people and should get human food, does that count?
Last week, I was having dinner with friends and there was a spare chair at the table. She hopped up and sat there pretty as you please waiting for me to serve her a plate...and I would have too, but we were having something that was bad for her kitty tummy.
As your vet to be sure, but I doubt the food mixup will hurt them too much, but do be careful about the garlic on the diet food. I think it's okay for dogs, but very unhealthy for cats.
Good luck with your confused pets.

I've heard mixed things about garlic and dogs. I believe that as long as it's in moderation they can eat it, not sure about the cats. They don't seem to like it anyways. The dogs, it keeps fleas at bay. It has seemed to work for us here too. The cats won't really even go near it though so they must realize it's "not good" for them? All of our animals think when the people eat they should too. LOL I gave up long ago with not feeding the animals people food. For the most part they get a nibble here and there with us.

My understanding is that cat food tastes better then dog food - but I will not swear to these since i have not eaten either one.
But dogs should never eat cat food. Cat food is supposed to be much richer then dog food and cause kidney / bladder problems for dogs if they eat it. If I remember correctly from when I housed multiple species?
Check with your vet, but until then please keep them apart.

The cat food is also about 4x as calorie filled. The reason being, cats have a much higher metabolism then dogs (kind of hard to figure out since a cat sleeps all day while my dogs run around like nuts). But yes, it definitely is not good for them to eat regularly. The same for the cats, as the dog food has more ash and that causes kidney infections and stones in cats.
Then again, eating people food is bad for them too and I've yet to have a dog not live well past it's years expected so I'm gonna have to say c'est la vie on that! LOL

Thanks for bringing back memories when I had my Golden Retriever and my cat, and a horse. The golden loved to eat the horse food when I would get it ready, it had molasses in it, and she perferred cat food over her own dog food. The cat ate the dog food so I guess it worked out. lol As for the horse, she was the only one that ate the right food for the species! LOL

We used to buy these minty horse snacks for our horse and our dogs LOVED them! The mixed lab also used to love eating carrots! LOL He got jealous when we would feed the horse or the little critters, like hamsters, carrots so we'd toss them to him and because they ate them, suddenly he loved them! It was hilarious! I think you're right, somehow they survive it all!

There are actually vegans out there who make their own animals vegan. I'm not so sure how "good" that is either though considering animals are meant to eat certain things and in particular cats and dogs meats. But I suppose they'd survive just as well as humans if done properly.
