Day 2 of My New Job

United States
May 15, 2007 2:21pm CST
I attended the all day orientation on Monday and went away with a migraine. The orientation was mostly regarding safety, policy, HIPPA, and emergency situations. The final part was 45 minutes long and had to do with using email. Um, I was bored. Today I shadowed one of the other workers. We spent the morning and afternoon with 2 clients. Although I was supposed to shadow, I couldn't stand around with my hands in my pockets, so I swept the floors, did the dishes, emptied trash, did laundry and cleaned the countertops. The meaning of the shadowing was to famiarize myself with the clients homes, where they kept their cleaning supplies, etc. My boss let me go home early today. That was a nice surprise. One good thing about the job is that I will be able to wear shorts in warmer weather. Some of the places I will be cleaning do not have air conditioning or fans. I will need to wear cooler clothing in order to not overheat! I ran into many people that I have known from my working at my former job. They were all happy to see me. It was also nice to see them again. Tomorrow I will start my day a bit earlier. I need to be to work by 7 a.m., not a great hour for me! I will need to get to bed earlier. The good part is that I will be able to end my day earlier. My normal work day will be 8-4. Just wanted to keep everyone posted. Huggers to all!

It will get better, I'm sure. Starting a job is usually pretty blah the first few days. They go over everything. I hope you have a better day tomorrow. The hours don't sound bad at all.

The hours are really good. I have a little time left over in the afternoon for my own errands.

When I got back to the office, my boss seemed a little surprised that I jumped right in. I told her that I am not one to stand around with my hands in my pockets. I would rather keep myself busy.

That is so great for you, finding old friends. I am glad this is working out, it sounds like you will be in the right places at just the right time. I know how much this kind of help is needed. Good luck.

I can't wait to get my own case load. The shadowing is to get you acquainted with the patients so that when you have to fill in for their regular worker, they aren't taken by surprise when you show up.

Sorry about the migraine. Those are miserable. Sounds like day 2 was more interesting for you? You also sound excited about what your normal work day will be and are looking forward to it. That's good you ran into people from your previous job? That should help you feel more comfortable in your new job. :)

I'm glad to hear it is working out. That is good you can wear cooler clothing, many older people keep their houses warmer,it seems even in the summer they are colder. I bet your boss ws pleased that you just were a working dynamo instead of just standing and observing. Way to go elusive butterfly.

It sounds good...you sound happy. You may want to consider getting a little box fan to bring with you ...for those hot days and no AC. A few creature comforts can make the day much more pleasant.

Good idea on the box fan. I will have to ask if it is appropriate for me to bring one with me.

I was wondering how things were going with your job. But with being offline for most of last week and then murphy's law taking over my life, I missed this discussion when you posted it. I hope by now that you are on our own and really enjoying your job.

I passed the cpr course and will most likely be assigned clients of my own after next week. I have to shadow a few more people before I can be out on my own. I do enjoy the job though.

well great your moving right along then aren't you? they are lucky to have you and your going to de-stress so quickly after you get a couple of pay checks. It must make you feel very good at the end of the day knowing that you helped someone that cannot help themselves. GOOD Deal for you both ! Congrats.

Sorry to hear about the migraine yesterday. That's rough trying to work with one. Boy, you sure were busy doing all that stuff. I'll bet those clients will be glad when you come over. I'm happy to hear the update on your job. It sounds like you're doing well.

I enjoyed watching the smiles on the faces of the clients as they greeted the person who had been regularly working with them. She had taken a few days off and had returned. They were all friendly people and I enjoyed being there.

Sorry about the migraine....hope it wasn't the full strength kind that takes hours to overcome without a good medication. As for the rest, sounds like you have found a working niche that you will enjoy, especially since you have been reunited with some former friends. It's always nice to see at least one familiar face on a new job. Just thinking about the 8-4 hours makes me shudder to remember when I had to get up early to get to work....so glad that there was no internet at the time or I would never get any sleep. Keep on trucking elusive but please don't overdo it. +

I am adjusting to the early hours. Having had ot bring my grandson to school by 8:15 got me up early before I started working. The earlier hours of 7:00-3 really took its toll on my body. But, I found that if I go to bed earlier, I can work it. Do I want to? Not if I can help it. The person doing the scheduling has been very gracious with keeping me to an 8-4 workday. Hopefully it will remain that way.

The first day is always twiddle your thumbs borring. After that when you can get your hands into the mix so to speek you strat enjoying it. I was like this when i started as a chasier a few years back. I was so borred that i couldn't stand it but my oreantation was for 2 days befor i was able to run the register. They where scared that i would be able to keep up with the work. How wrong they all where. I hope that you really enjoy the new job and wish you all the luck and fun that goes along with it. Try not to get to attatched to the clients though. I'm just thinking about how you would feel if something happened to them after you got attached. It's painful some times.

They keep telling me that it isn't a good idea to become too attached. I know many of the clients from having them as clients in my former job. Some of the former clients have passed. I do feel saddened by their passing. I try not to get too emotionally attached. Orientation is the pits, but it is necessary. You cover all the bases before you send someone out.

Grats on being the "busy body" type. Every job I ever had was the same. I could not sit by doing nothing at all even during training phases. I have to be kept busy or boredom sets in and I want to leave or something. Keep up the great job and good luck. Happy to hear you're doing so well already. Seeing the old friends/co-workers must have been great also for all of you. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

It was nice to see the people that I haven't seen in months. One of them was actually someone that I hadn't seen in years. We were best friends in high school. Time and life ended that one. It was good to see her again.

Oh I hate all those orientation trainings. I don't blame you for pitching in...it's tough to just stand around while others work and just watch...lol I hope it works out great for you. Good luck, Mari

Sounds good! The orientation sounds quite boring- but I've never been to one that was fun! Those are great hours- 8-4. Seems like you will really enjoy this job- Wear what you want- keep cool. The work day sounds like it will fly right by- Always doing something different- and active. Just got to get through the shadowing and training part to set your schedule.
