What to buy for my friend's son's birthday?

My friend's son's birthday is approaching fast. He will turn 14 and I don't know what to get for him. When he was much younger, he had gotten stationery sets from me year after year. Nothing fancy nor expensive. It's always the thought that counts although it may not apply for a youngster like him. Any practical gift for him?
