It's not the job of the government to dictate employment benefits.

Personally I think that ninety days is not enough. Do you know what a woman goes throught in pregnancy and childbirth? Do you know how screwed up our hormones get after giving birth? If a woman is sent back to work too soon and it is causing her more stress and illness, then it will be worse for the economy if a woman is sent back into the workplace with the added pressures of a baby and every thing else she has to cope with, going in too early. If the woman's mental and physical health is comprpromised in the short term, the long term costs on medical bills and absent work days will have for more long lasting effects on the economy than the short term time needed for the mother to get used to her new role and her body getting back to normal hormone levels. Always people look for short term gain that have devastating long term effects that are more costly. I say extend the maternity leave and bring the cost of long term stress and health problems down in the long run. A healthy mother and wife is better for the economy than a stressed out distressed one.

What country are you asking about? I'm in the UK and maternity leave has just increased from 6 months to 12 months, in line with many European countries. One factor which positively impacts a country's economy is a high birth rate, so I think it's a very good thing to have realistic and proper maternity provision for leave to make sure that women are able to have children.

In my country, the Philippines, we just have 60 days maternity leave and I wish it's longer. I have two kids now and I left them both to nannies when they were turning two months. And now, they are closer to their nannies compared to me.
However, when it comes to the economy of a country, I would say that the shorter the maternity, the better. This is because women now are sources of manpower. Many mothers, even in conservative cultures, choose to work to help in family expenses. So if they are on leave for a longer period of time, then there is less production.

I say take as long as you need for the mother and the babys sake.
I would have taken 90 doays if I was able too thats for sure.
