The library offers many weekly activities as well as Toys R Us. There are a variety of summer day camps and Vacation Bible Schools. The zoo is always fun, visiting state parks. Fun stuff at home even, making homemade ice cream, learning to draw dinosaurs, making your own picture book....

Great ideas! In our area, local movie theaters provide cheap (or even free) movies sometimes for families. The city has outdoor movies and concerts. Some big venues, like the Hollywood Bowl and Race Track have free entry for kids to listen to the orchestra practice or watch the horses train. Some moms hook up and one invites kids over to swim, another brings snacks, another brings games, etc. The local parks have free programs for kids. Going to the beach is free and fun.

There are summer courses for kids. Different courses for different age groups.. If the kid has interest in computers send him for some shor term computer course..if he has interest in sport send him for swimming or skiing...
The best way is to keep him occupied

I am in the same boat as you are. We are on a tight budget and not alot to do.
What I have done is set up a schedule based on free activites in the city. The local library has reading time, free arts and crafts, and since my son can read we go pick out books every week. We go to the free events put on by the zoo, go have picnics at the park, walk around the mall and go visit the pet store, we visit the local art museum (which is currently free), we live in an apartment complex so we use the pool. I try to come up with as many at home activites as possible - long term crafts, school exercises (we use a reader rabbit game), play time outside with the kids in the complex.
Every week the paper has a list of free activities for kids. I check that out and put them on our "schedule" of things to do.
