I would suggest you freewebs.com and 50webs.com, both are free and don't put up their banner in the site. Both are really quite a decent free hosting site and very famous with many users using it.

I'm with dreamhost it's not free but you can get a large discount for the first year, and the give almost unlimited space and bandwith. Because it's shared hosting sometimes your site can be down but you'll have the same problem with free hosting.
