A sincere apology and a simple "Something came up" should suffice. But if the person is particularly pushy, feel free to let them know that you prefer not to discuss the details.

It's quite easy for me to lie. Being a natural liar, which I am not proud of, I can easily think of something that can get me out of the situation. If it doesn't work then I'll use some of my acting skills. I never admitted that I have done anything wrong in my life.
