I think that the father is the best friend for the son and the mother is the best friend for the daughter since they can relate to personal experiances when dealing with their children and will be able to better understand and help them in their time of need.

It really isn't that cut and dry. In my nuclear unit, my parents have great issues with my brother but adore me (the daughter). It's actually really funny because my father gets along with me the best but he tells me my mother says I get along with her the best. Generally I am just non-confrontational and "a good kid." (not implying I am lying but just really the stereotypical "good kid")
I talk with both and really, as a kid knowing the standpoint of the parents, being a friend can really be an opportunistic thing. For instance, I might be a friend of my dad's when I want a ride or a little extra spending cash or a friend of my mom's when I want permission to go out somewhere.
As for honestly being close to either, I'm not. They are pretty disinterested in my interests, so it's harder to talk to either of them in the same way I would talk to a friend. They don't "hang out" with me if you will.

Mothers are close to their sons and fathers are close to their daughters. That's just the way it is :-)
