Dogs and flying in planes

I am going to visit some family next month but don't know what to do with my dog. Has anyone taken them on a plane before? I have a little rat terrior who thinks he's a baby. I think they have special carrying cases for dogs that fit right under the seat, but I think my dog would cry te whole time. You can't just carry the dog and keep him in your lap, can you?

Most airlines want to know far in advance if you are going to be travelling with a pet. If you already know what airline you are taking, call them and find out if you can bring your dog as carry on baggage. Some airlines have pet restrictions. I know Delta allows pets in the cabin, but Virgin Atlantic does NOT. The dog cannot sit on your lap, he has to stay in his crate beneath the seat in front of you for the duration of the trip. Another thing to consider is that flying is extremely stressful to dogs and if you think he is going to bark the whole time, then ask your vet to prescribe a sedative or leave him at home with a petsitter. The worst flight I ever took was with a woman and her Chihuahua mix sitting behind me. The dog yapped the ENTIRE 9 hour redeye flight and all she did was pet the dog saying "Its ok baby, its almost over!" I wanted to kill them both. And I think just about everyone else on the plane did too. Gives a new meaning to the term "redeye".

I think united airlines allows pets in travel boxes on their flights. I remember a woman on one of our flights having her dog with her, but she'd bought a seat for him. You might want to ask your vet what you could use to calm your dog down before the flight. IN SA they recommend a herbal formula called rescue remedy. It's supposed to calm both animals and humans down. You'd have to give it to him daily for about a week b4 u fly to ensure his comfort. The other thing u could do is get him a mild sedative (from the vet) so he doesn't disturb other passengers (u dun want to be the most unpopular person on the flight), will sleep for most of the time and so is unlikely to get sick.

U can't take the dog out his carrier, but u could buy him a seat next to u and keep him facing u. For more info, contact the airline u booked ur seat on or go to their website and look up travelling w pets. Be careful about taking him w u tho. They tend to get sick and upset w all the travelling. Our boxer pup got put into the cargo section of the plane cos he wasn't allowed in the passenger section and then they forgot to send him!!! We landed in durban and looked for him and eventually found out the airline forgot to put him on the plane. So travel w him in his travel box, sitting next to u if u can. Also, please remember the other passengers on the flight might not be too pleased if u took him out his box, esp if they have allergies.

I can't believe they forgot to send him! Was he ok? How long was it until you got him?

Welcome to South Africa's customer service. Tho, I have to say that in the USA, our bags ALWAYS get lost, so I dun hold out much hope for travelling with a pet in the hold there either. Simba eventually arrived on a much later flight (about 5 hours later, so we had to stand around awaiting for him in the airport) and was very jittery and nervous afterwards. It took a good few days for him to settle and of course he was stressed, so blood in his stools etc. Needless to say, we requested a refund from the airline for their carelessness. Can u imagine if we'd taken the last flight out that day? The poor pup hadn't eaten all day cos he might have gotten travel sick (vet's orders), which he did anyway and if they'd forgotten him overnight, he would have had no food or water for almost or over a day. It's cruel!

I would call the airlines and ask them. I had a friend who came to NY and bought a tiny dog. He went back to California and was able to hold the dog for the flight. It is worth a phone call.

I'm surprised he was allowed to hold him. I have decided not to bring him with me. It will already be hard enough to travel with a baby. One of our friends will take him for the week. I think that will be best. He'll be sad, but its better than trying to get him on the plane.
