I scared myself!

So I have been having this pain, which I suspect is a hernia. Joy.
And everybody has been nagging me to see a doctor, and then I got on the internet and did a search on symptoms.
After reading all kinds of things it COULD be, besides a hernia, like ovarian cancer or endometriosis, I scared myself into calling a doctor.
My appointment is next Thursday, last night and this morning the pain is worse, so I just hope I can hold out till then, if not, then I will call and see if I can't get in earlier.
Have you ever done that? Researched something like a symptom and scared yourself to the point you did something about it?
I figure it's better to get checked out and find out what is really wrong instead of worrying about the worst case scenario.

Make sure if the pain gets so bad you can't stand it, get to the emergency room, don't wait to go to the doctor. That's what my mom did, not that had she gotten there sooner it would have saved her life, (God decided she deserved to rest and called her home) but since the nurse the day before said to call the doctor, we did and they said come in the next day, so mom waited and it was too late. =(
I have done that before too, like most moms, I put taking care of myself last, I look things up on the Internet, some of those things really can scare you. I have gone to the doctor when things got worse, but sometimes the pains go away and I forget about them. I get too busy taking care of the kids, my husband, or my mother-in-law (until Feb, I was taking care of my mom too). During the time mom was sick and I was spending all my time at the hospital, I got really stressed out and my immune system was shot, I got very sick, I had to beg my sister to come sit with mom so I could go to the doctor, that in turn just added more stress.
Go to the doctor or the emergency room, just be sure to take care of yourself. Let us know what you find out too. ((hugs))

I always check symptoms on the computer. A really bad habit of mine. I can tell you though that after the intial scare the nice thing about it is that you can find others going through the same thing and find treatments a doctor may not tell you about. My SO had spots on him and he thought it was cancer so made an appointment for the doctor. I searched and searched even after they did the biopsy as we waited for the results. I finally found a spot that looked exactly like his and sure enough it wasn't cancer it was lupus. Our doctor had never had a lupus patient so when the results came back he wasn't really sure what all to do. Thank goodness I had found the sites I did and we are happy to report he is doing ok with it. So use the facts that you found as a benefit to help. Check out how to ease the pain and try the tips they have. It might not be the worst but if any of the tips help then you can at least feel better until you find out for sure what it is. I hope everything comes out good for you!!

Thank you for responding.
My sister went through a time period when she was really sick, after researching and researching she discovered she has Ciliac disease, which none of the doctors she saw even thought to check her for. Simply put, she is allergic to any food with wheat, barley, and oats in it, so a change in diet was what helped her. If she hadn't searched, she would probably still be wondering what's wrong with her.

i hope you're feeling much better now. i'm so late answering discussions but i'm still trying to answer them slowly. i have tried that before by reading so much stuff in the internet. and in the end i learned, just to follow my bodily instincts and trust the doctors sometimes, hehehe!!

I have done this, not with myself, but with my daughter when she was having pains in her side. The internet is a wonderful thing but sometimes it can be not so good.

I think a lot of people with internet access hve done something similar. I think it is good that you are going to the doctor and getting it checked out but I would try very hard to restrain my worry until you are seen.
I don't know if you know this, but I have a cough I can't shake. Other than a fever, I have all the symptoms of tuberculosis. I haven't had an xray to rule it out, and TB is on the rise in Ireland, but I know intellectually the real odds are very slim. I think it is natural, once you know the close symptom similarity to worry.
I did see a doctor and was told I have allergies and my lungs are simply overwhelmed and to take 2 prescriptions. She though that would do the trick, and sor me in 10 days, and that hasn't been the case, so I still worry in the back of my mind. Since I will be travelling to another environment soon, I expect that will solve my problem. Fingers crossed for me and you!
