How safe are loft beds?

My daughter's been wanting a loft bed for years. I've been against the idea because I'm afraid she'll fall off it in her sleep. But she wants one so she can have a table underneath and play under there.
Do your kids have one and have they fallen out and gotten hurt?

How old is your daughter? My daughter was 5 when she got hers, she always slept on the top. There was a bar installed on the side of the bed to prevent her from falling.

she's 6, and she wants to get her friend's loft bed. The friend has fallen out of this bed even though there are wooden bars on the sides, that's why her parents are selling it.

Get some body size pillows, and put them up by the rails. (on the bed, next to the bed rails) Or maybe make the bed rails higher up.
