Is the U.S properly understood by the people of other nations? How? Why?

In this uni-polar world, materially the U.S has gained the top position. The American way of life--it means many things for many-- is imitated through out the world.What is the real contribution of America to the world, according to you? Even though the U.S is imitated and envied, there is a lot of negative feeling about this country. What do you think is the reason? Do you think some of the feelings are worthy of taking note? What are they? How would you try to react to them?
