Since you are living in great times for book readers, you will be happy to know the Book Mooch, http://www.bookmooch.co.uk is alive and active in the UK... go check them out, you will be able to trade and obtain access to books for postage only... it's a great option! :)

It is difficult to recommend a style of book without knowing your tastes. I like fantasy books and they can be quite complex stories so it would take a bit longer to read through them. They also tend not to sell as well as chick lit so are not as expensive. If you are reading lots charity shops or sales at the library are a cheap source. Where I work we have a stand where you can borrow one if you add one to replace it and a few pence for charity.

Smuggeridge ,Why not just go to amazon.com .Choose the subject matter that most appeals to you or check out the best seller category .Then once you've decided on a few book titles go and check out E-BAY .Sometimes you can purchase them for pennies .That is the used ones of course .

If you like fantasy books like Tolkien style, then I recommend you Terry Pratchett. I love his style and it always relaxes me:).

Try going to your local GoodWill Store, Salvation Army Thrift Store and watch for Garage sales! We get a lot of books that way. We also watch for the buy 2 get one free sales at our local stores that have books. We have a couple of used bookstores here as well that I visit now and again. There are also internet groups that trade books so you can get rid of the ones you have read and then get new ones. Usually costs nothing unless you have to pay shipping. (But that is minimal if you use mail instead of UPS or something).
Happy Reading!
