Life without electricity

How prepared are you if your electricity was to go out for longer than just a couple of hours? I know in many countries, electricity is a luxury, but here in the United States it is a necessity and we take it for granted. My electricity went out for just 22 hours and I thought it was terrible. Here in the United States, we take many things for granted and the majority of us could not survive without the luxury of electricity. Everything we have is powered by the mighty electricity and everyone around would panic if we were to ever lose it for very long, we just could not survive without it. Just like the black out a couple of years ago, everyone thought it was an attack on the US again and didn't know how to handle it, everything shut down and people were asked not to drive in the city because the lights didn't work and businesses had to shut down because they had no way to run it. This has just made me stop and think about what would really happen to the US if we were to lose all our source of electricity. How would any of us survive?

I am from Pakistan and its very worse condition here because I have to face power failures alot. All the power failures occur without telling in advance. Other to this the low voltage is also a problem. My modem got out of order all because of low voltage. The power failures here are almost 3-5 hours daily. Sometimes you are sleeping and power off.

Sounds like in your country, that electricity is scarce and sometimes rare to have. I do not mean to belittle or speak bad of your country. Here in the states, electricity has become a very important part of our survival and way of life. I could not imagine being without electricity on a daily basis. We have taken it for granted and not too many of us would know how to manage life without. I can handle it going out at night while I am sleeping, but not while I am awake.

I think it would be hard w/out electricity for your right everything we do now a days requires this and I think we would all be lost w/ out it. When I lose my electricity here at my complex I have back up candles, blankets, warm clothes, food that dosn't require electricity to cook it, I will listen music on my portable cd player and use batteries, read a book by candle light, ect... just to make time pass. It does get very boring and lonely when the electricity goes out for I am so spoiled w/ it that to have it taken away I know I'm lost w/ out it.

I would find it hard to have to survive without electricty for any period of time . Even when it goes out for a couple of hours , it seems that is the time we all get hungry and want something more then a sandwich to eat . The children are often bored and it is harder to find ways to entertain them especially in the dark when night is coming on and when you have a child that is afraid of the dark it makes it equally hard trying to calm them down all night when there is no light for them to go to bed .
I am nervous of a bunch of candles because I am afraid something will happen and someone will get burnt .
It is true that we have become so dependent on what we have that we don't even realize how much we take it for granted until we lose it .

I have lots of candles and lamp oil. We have a wood stove so heat and cooking are not a problem. We have city water even where we live but I also have water containers too just in case. And we definately have plenty of food, warm clothes, and blankets
