I expected to improve my language proficiency here in mylot. But the more I read here the less self confident I became. I read many posts in which the english used is very weird and there are so many words that I have never met before. Even some structures are so strange to me that I can hardly understand their meanings. I did not know my english was that poor before I joined mylot. What's wrong with my english?

Ther's nothing wrong with your English. In fact it's a lot better than some people on the site.
A lot of people who come here from other countries don't have English as their primary language so it's hard for them to translate to English what they mean to say.
In time it will get easier for you to understand the basics of what these people are trying to say, but it takes a lot of patience sometimes.
Just keep doing what you do and you'll improve even more.

Your English seems fine to me. I am an English teacher and I wish some of my students could put together a sentence as well as you have here. Don't worry about the words you don't understand. If they are important to you look them up.

I agree with this response. I guess your discussion points out to mylotters who can't write English as good as you do. The way i see it, it's not really yourself that is the problem but the people here who you think could not measure up to your standards of the written English language. Like what balasri has just mentioned, we are here to share opinios and build frinedships, not learn the English language. You might as well go to online tutorials if you want REALLY want to improve anything but i think there really isn't any improving to do coz your sentence structure is already good. Sorry for sounding so blunt but this is how i personally think of your discussion....just my opinion :)

how do you learn eitehr speaking or writing a language, use it.
the object of the forum is not as a lesson to learn English but since it is written in English it is a great way to practice your English writing.

I don't think your English is the problem. A lot of times when talking on forums like mylot people use a lot of slang, which is hard for those who aren't native speakers of that language to learn. Not only for non-native speakers, but also for people of other countries or even just regions. I know when I moved from one state to another within the United States I discovered a lot of regional slang that I didn't know.
Another problem is that many people online use shortcuts specifically for online use, like instant message or text speak. So many of those "words" you don't know might not be "words" at all.
From reading your post, I would say that you are doing wonderful! Keep up the good work!

you know, i wonder if they will earn less because of short cut words. I think mylot uses word count as a way to pay you as well. They did ask for good quality posts, so that means it has at least to be long. I wonder if those shortcutters realise they've lessened their earning potential if it is the case that those words will be overlooked as gibberish by the system.

your english seems pretty good to me
I guess it depends on which discussions you are referring to ... some people use slang, some people use abbreviations ( 'u' for you, 'ur' for your ...) so it can be misleading, some forget about ponctuation or just don't read what they type and it can come out weird ... also some are not living in an English speaking country, and although they are doing their best, some transposition can appear difficult to understand
If it's only new words, well get a dictionary next to you or online and you will learn ...also a great place to improve your English would be chatrooms
but I don't see nothing wrong with your English
good luck and hang in there

Thank you all for your encouragment. Just now I read a title of a post. there were about 10 words in it and all the nouns there seemed strange to me, I checked up the dictionary and found they were not included, so the first impression I got was they were all seriously misspelled. I could not even guess their meanings. But strange it seemed, the post got quite a few responses that I started to think it's my problem but not the starter's.

You speak or type very well! I think you will find subtle differences in english because english speaking people from different countries have inherited these differences. I am from Canada so my sentence could mean the same as an Americans sentence, but one or two words could be used differently. I've spoken english all my life and yet i am still learning the language! LOL!
Take care Easyheng.

That was good step, write more to improve your english, but for me this is some problem that everybody that leave far away from europe and try to speak english they want to speak perfect english, common man, i dont know what your first language, but do you speak it in perfect form like written in the book? i think of course not, so don't worry about your english, just speak up and every body understand what are you talking about that just find. No time to think about structure and whatever that to make your english perfect. I think if you are talking very-very perfect english maybe people will laught at you because it will sound like weirdo..
i dont have good english, so what? but i'm understand what are people talking in english that is more than enough for me. I don't make money using good english, but with the knowledge right now i can learn in english, that is good.. So no need to put your self in pressure to get good english.

when i met the words i don't know,i will look it up in a dictionary immediately, and for those names or places i don't know,i ignore them.really,i can't keep in mind some famous people's name, they are too long to remember, but if they are translated into Chinese, then i know who they are.

I think there's nothing wrong with your English. You might be a lot better than many people here in myLot. Most people here are not native speakers of English so you sometimes find posts that contain wrong grammar and sentence structure. Those people does not even bother to learn English because they are here to earn, not to learn the English language.

I come to mylot in order to improve my English. I love english very much. English is only a language, a tool for people to communicate with each other, so if people can understand you, that is ok. Mistakes are not so important. In fact, even native English speakers will make mistakes in their articles.Don't doubt your English, you see many people give you their responses. You make it.
I majored in English when I was in university. As you know, we have no environment, although they are many native english teachers there. Most of the time, we speak Chinese in daily life. Only in oral english class, we would try to speak more. As an english major, I really hope that I will obtain a chace to go for United States or other European countries, such as UK.To enjoy the life there. To feel the exotic culture. :)
Practice makes perfect, let's learn from each other and make progress together. Confidence an action will lead us to success.

Dear easyzheng,
If you have joined to improve your language, then you are at the wrong place. But if you are interested in improving your general knowledge and procuring information on varied subjects then it's O K. Language is a structured form of the things that happen in your mind. When you see a fruit you may call it apple, and if you tell the same to a dozen other people and if they agree to call it the same then it is named apple. Thus language is a medium of expression of your thoughts. Ever since the invention of the WWW. strict language structures and rules have become less important. So if you'd like to improve your language proficiency read books, watch programs on tv, video, and speak and interact with people who speak the same language. If you need any help, you are free to contact me.

there is nothing wrong with your english, its very good. There are a lot of people on here with very poor english which i can't understand either. The other problem is probably the use of slang words, every country has different words which no one else understands.

easyzheng,
Your English is excellent. I like reading your sentences. Sometimes, I also didn't understand some postings here or perhaps, I had a hard time to "digest" what they were talking about. But I do understand them. There are many members who are NOT native English speakers. I am one of them. However, there are native English speakers who are using slang language. Because myLot is informal discussions and they use to do it in social meetings.
If you want to improve your English, you need to "talk" with native speakers. Otherwise, you're getting more confused.

Hi friendship, I felt greatly encouraged by your response. I agree with you that talking more with native might help me improve my linguistic skills. Slangs always make me confused indeed.

Your post sounds good to me, sounds like you are doing a good job with learning English. I used to tutor foreign college students who had English as a second language. It is a very difficult language because it has so many exceptions to its rules, so many words that sound the same or even are spelled the same that have different meanings. And, then, of course, there are the "figures of speech" that are common to the the area they come from and make no sense at all to a person with English as a second language.
Take such a phrase is "don't buy a pig in a poke" - translated literally it makes no sense at all. In Spanish the same phrase would translate to "don't buy a cat for a hare", which makes no sense to us in the U.S.
And then there are the problem of typographical errors and misspellings to complicate the who thing.
So you get my admiration for doing so well with this crazy lanuage of ours.

Thank you for your sharing. I have been learning for many many years but never had the chance to go to an English speaking country. So I should say all I learned is from the books and used in class with my students. That's why I always find my the limitation of my english voc. Whenever I found a strange word, I could not be sure whether it's a misspelled word or a totally new word to me and I have checked up dictionary immediately. so when I came across a sentence with several words unknown to me, I would exclaim "Oh my, I did not know my english was so poor," and felt downcast for it. lol

Your English is a hell of a lot better than my Mandarin lol. You can be confused for one of two reasons. The first being that some here on Mylot cannot speak English that well, so their grammar maybe a little weak and they need help and support in improving their English language skills, or the second reason could be that some of us really cranky English speakers like to use loads of colloquial sayings in our flowery expressions here so it may be a slightly confusing for those learning standard text book English. I hope this helps a bit my friend, now you have forty three responses to this extremely clever discussion.

You've exactly hit the point there. what I learn and use is kind of textbook English as all I learned were from textbooks. What frustrate me most are the slangs and those as you say, flowery expressions that always daunt me when I talk with native speakers or watch English movies. I often find myself deaf and dumb with them.
