How do you figure out knitting instructions?

I love to knit, but I was taught by a family member and I only know how to perform the basic knit stitch. I have tried to follow knitting instructions for projects and I am often thrown by the abbreviations. Is there anyone who can explain the basics of knitting instructions? How can I better understand them?

There are tons of knitting resources that can explain abbreviations and different stitches...however I bet you are not always near a computer when you are knitting. That said, might I reccomend the book, "Stitch and *itch" by Debbie Stroller. There are actually two of these books (the second being Stitch and *itch Nation), but the first book is a great resource with tons of info on knitting basics. It's one of my favorite knitting books and I refer back to it quite often. It also has some really funky and cool patterns, at all varying levels of difficulty. If you have a book you can take it with you where ever you are knitting...this way you won't get held up at a certian part in the pattern.

Thank you so much! I am ready to graduate from the scarf. A book with instructions in plain non-abbreviated english will be very helpful.

I tought myself to knit about a year ago. The things that help me the most are my dvd and The Knitter's Bible. Do you knit holding the yarn in your left or your right hand? If you hold it in your left hand that is Contenantal Knitting. If you hold it in your right hand that is English Knitting. Get a DVD that shows the tipe of knitting you do. The Knitters Bible has every thing you need to know for both kinds of knitting. I love my Knitters Bible. I got mine from a Craft Book Club. Hope this helps you.

I learned to knit from I TAUGHT MYSELFT TO KNIT. A book with all the basic instructions, abbreviations, plus knitting needles to help you get started in knitting. Also you can find lots of help and instructions on line, even videos explaining how to do certain stitches. The book I mentioned above is available at any Micheals Arts and Crafts and WalMart stores. Happy knitting!
