Have you ever had pneumonia?

I went to the doctor today because I've been having trouble breathing. I have pneumonia. If you've had this before, how long did it take you to recover? What did you find was the most comfortable way to sleep? I feel like I'm suffocating at night.

I've never had pneumonia before but my son did..he was really sick..I am sure that they put you on some good antibiotics and breating treatments..you really need to make sure that you do what the doctor tells you..you must have had what they call "walking pneumonia"?..this is actually worse because you don't know you have it until it gets really bad.. After my son started on his meds..he was feeling much better in about a week...prop yourself up at night too..this is important..he started caughing up ..I know this sounds bad..but some really bad phlegm...so be sure to try getting and spitting that out..you will get much better

I would guess it is walking pneumonia, which is just a milder pneumonia that doesn't require hospitalization. My doc didn't call it that though, she just said I have pneumonia. Maybe they don't call it that anymore?? (walking)

My mom and grandpa had it, they called it light pneumonia because it was almost like bronchiolitis and it wasn't too serious. It was bacterial pneumonia so they had to take about 5 to 6 weeks of antibiotics, yea they told me it was bad to sleep as well. Basically, if you can get some tea tree oil or Vick's vapor rub and put it on your chest at night that can help you. At least that is what they did.

Oh, I've heard wonders about tea tree oil. Do you know where you can get it?

First I want to say that I am sorry you are not feeling well and I hope you get better soon. I had pneumonia once a long time ago when I was about 16. But that was back in the day when they put you in the hospital. I was there about five days but it took a week or so before I was back to my old self. I remember it was easier to sleep sitting up as much as you could. Either get a recliner chair or prop the head of your bed up and lots of pillows.

Yeah, it seems they don't hospitalize you anymore unless it is really severe. I am on the same meds they give you in the hospital though, so hopefully they will kick in soon and I'll start to feel better. I've been sleeping on the couch with my head on the arm rest so I'm propped up, but I can't stand sleeping "sitting up". I only have down pillows, and they get so flat that it's pointless. I just want 1 good night's sleep!

I get it about once a year the best thing to do is props some pillows so that you are upright some what this helps. It takes about a week for you to feel better. It is a horrible feeling and I hope you get well soon.

I am so sorry to hear that you are feeling so badly. I read that you are sleeping on the couch with your head on the headrest. You also state that your down pillows go flat. Is there a seat cushion from another chair that you can prop on the headrest creating an incline? Then put your pillow at the top of that. You really will rest better in an incline postiion. Had you been hospitalized the staff would have likely placed your bed with the head at a 45 degree angle. Also, to re-open your air passages that are squeezed down from the pneumonia, try inhaling v-e-r-y slowly to the count of 5 or 6. When you get to six, don't exhale...hold your breath as long as you can, then exhale v-e-r-y- slowly! Another thing to do is get a straw, bear down as if having a bowel movement and blow through the straw very lightly...try pushing a paperwad around on a table or something. This creates negative pressure in your lungs and opens up some of the constricted airways! Good luck to you!

Yep.. It sucks. Did the doctor give you some cough medicine to help you sleep at night? Make sure that you have a few pillows under you. Being elevated helped me out alot. I had a horrible bout with bronchitis, pneumonia, viruses, sinus infections etc. It all lasted about 8 weeks or so and really sucked. Make sure you go back for the recheck appointment.

I have COPD and they told me to put blocks under the head of my bed to help elevate my head so I can breath easier it does help and if you use a wedge pillow they help as well and if you use a humidifier to keep mositure in the room it helps some.I hope that you get to feeling better my friend and I hope this helps.
