Traveling is expensive

There's too many places, but so little time...and money. Whenever I tell people that I want to travel the world, they always tell me that I should become rich first. Why does traveling have to be so expensive? Even traveling here within my country (Philippines) costs a whole lot. If I can't afford to travel within here, how am I supposed to see the world? How can I walk the whole Great Wall of China or climb Mt. Everest or visit the Great Pyramids? How do people manage to see the world?!

Traveling is expensive because of gasoline prices, and because of all the people wanting to travel. Supply and demand, so spending goes up and up and up.

Aren't they? The taxes are incredulous! They have promos here in the Philippines where the fares are only 1 Peso for local flights. Sure it's only a peso, but after the taxes are added, they amount to more that Php2000!

the P1 fare is just to lure would-be customer to purchase tickets.. but you still save a lot with the promos! but still its still expensive, as you've said, to even travel in the country.. if you want to save, try land transpo (buses) then roro if you want to go the visayas.. the savings is not tantamount to the fatigue youll experience, sitting in the bus all day! :(

the price of anything is determined only by what people are happy to pay, nothing more. Travel is only expensive because people are willing tom pay it and many people want to do it, get rid of the disire and the price will fall blessed be

It's hard to let go of something that you've always wanted. Even as a child, I always asked my mom to buy me books that show places around the world - historical places especially. Traveling around the world has always been a goal.

I don't believe that travelling is expensive and that you should be rich for you to travel. Im working in a travel agency (tours and travel) here in the Philippines. I found the tours and travel packages less expensive. =)

Really? But even if some packages and promos are available, they still fall as expensive. Hehe I wish traveling was free just like the ancient times. ^^,

I don't think that you should worry about that. To begin with, the best way to make a plan to travel is to choose to work in the country by getting a job there. Then you can just work and travel when it is your day off. I am glad that you would like to come to China to pay a visit to the Great Wall, which is worth visiting. In China, there is a very famous saying--He who has never been to the Great Wall is not a real man. Welcome to work in China and then travel anywhere in China. We have a lot of your country-fellows working here. Why not try to find a job here to make your dream come true? It can just make both ends meet--work and travel abroad. Welcome to China,my friend!

That's what I'm planning...work in the countries that I'd like to visit. Although I think I'd prefer to be like a vagabond lol. All I'd do is to earn what I need to survive a day. It would be great to be a backpacker and walk through the whole Great Wall! ^_^

i agree that travelling within the philippines is very expensive. but actually, what makes it very expensive is that we often depend on travel agencies for booking and everything. i love travelling too and at times i depend on travel agencies for booking and all the other stuffs but at times i only depend on them for booking because it's cheaper when you do all the other stuff on your own. for example, if i would like to go to davao and i know that i would pay the travel agency around Php12,000 for a 3 days/2 nights trip (which includes air fare, accomodation, and local transfer), i'd rather have them book for a flight for me then i do the rest. by doing so, i get to save more. better yet, take advantage of discounts by taking a tuesday or wednesday flights or do a group booking. if you want to go out of the country, it's cheaper when you book by groups and do away (as much as you can) from package tours. they seem to be very cheap but actually not that practical. =)

Yeah, we rarely do package tours too. Oh and those tourist packages that has this tourist guide and transportation and stuff..I don't really like them because 1) too many people and 2) you don't have much time to enjoy the place you visit! Although sometimes, they tend to be cheaper because the tour agencies have tie-ups with the tourist spots and they get discounts ^_^

I do think that traveling in general doesn't necessarily mean that you have to put your house on loan or something for your expenses. There are a lot of cheap fares, alternatives that you can go for. Say, instead of staying at a hotel. Go for a simple hostel or inn. There are pretty much lodging available for backpacker- types. And it's usually much fun there. I do agree with you that traveling within the country is a bit pricey. The total amount you'd spend here could actually take you to a different country. That's why most Filipinos would prefer seeing other countries than their own. But man, there is so much to see here! Ang ganda ng Pinas! (The Philippines is a beautiful place!) I'm so glad that somehow airlines have pushed their fares down, hope this helps us Filipinos discover the richness and beauty of our own land.

Lowered air-fares? You mean those Php1 tickets to anywhere in the Philippines? Well, the fares are indeed one peso but the added taxes amount to Php2000! That's atrocity if you ask me -_-

I save up money then find a cheap flight and go off on my trip. I stay in backpacker hostels, beach huts and guest houses. I travel around on trains, buses and boats. Some countries are more expensive than others. Japan is pricey and you would spend far less in Thailand. Working overseas is a good way of getting to travel to different countries. Have you thought of getting a job in China? Then you could walk sections of the Great Wall. You could fly from Beijing to Cairo when you have saved up some money. Then you could see the Great Pyramids. Good luck.

I'm afraid nothing can be done about the harsh reality that good things cost good money. If you really want to see the world, you should either work especially hard and hold back on expenses as much as you can, or just pray that you win the lottery. You should watch out for discounts and packages offered by travel agencies; this really helps you save. You should also take advantage of the miles programs from airline companies, although this also means you have to travel a lot to save on future flights. If travelling within the Philippines by plane is expensive, you have some alternatives. If your destination can be travelled by land, well, travel by land. It will take much, much longer, and will probably use up a lot of gasoline, but it's still cheaper, and as long as you bring your closest friends along, together with some music and perhaps a PSP or a DS or other portable forms of entertainment, the travel period will become a pleasant experience by itself, before you even get to your destination. Make sure to stop over at nice-looking spots and have a mini-picnic or take pictures, or just to stretch and enjoy some fresh air. For destinations separated from you by water, you should try travelling by boat if you haven't yet. It's much cheaper, and it's always refreshing to travel on water (unless you get seasick--but that can be solved). Although, I'm not sure if the ships themselves will be pleasant. Since the fare is cheap the ship owners might have to cut costs in terms of facilities and amenities. I hope this helps. Good luck and happy travelling.

Yes, I think it really is. But investing in it is really worth it.
