The Heroes season isn't yet complete. It's still their first season. the best place to do some reaserch on the show is the official website which also has an online graphic novel (comic) of the show with more details i think.
http://www.nbc.com/Heroes/
and you can also read about them on Wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heroes_(TV_series)
these are the main characters...
Mr. Bennet - Investigates people with powers, No Ability
Claire Bennet - Bennet's adopted daughter, Healing Herself (can't die)
D.L. Hawkins - an escaped criminal, walk through solid objects
Isaac Mendez - New York artist, paints the future
Hiro Nakamura - a programmer from Tokyo, freeze time, time travel
Matt Parkman - a Los Angeles police officer, telethapy (hear thoughts)
Nathan Petrelli - a New York Congressional candidate, fly
Peter Petrelli - a former hospice nurse, absorbes powers of others
Micah Sanders - D.L. and Niki's son, technopath,
Niki Sanders - A former internet stripper from Las Vegas, alter personality
Mohinder Suresh - a professor of genetics from India, son of the professor who discorverd the gene trait
...as for the meeting each other, its all pretty complicated. basiclly, there's a bomb thats going to destory New York and they all somehow come together to stop it. Peter, Nathan & Issac already live in New York and Issac painted the city blowing up. While Hiro was playing with his powers he traveled a couple of weeks into the Future to New York to witness Issac being killed by Sylar (a murder collecting powers by cutting peoples heads open) and also the explosions in which he transports himself back and begins his quest to save the world.
...its all complicated. I know watching it from the begining helps. You can try downloading epsidoes off Bittorrents and I think the Sci-Fi channel replays episodes there. There's only a 2 more episodes left in the season so watching now will be useless cause you'll be completly lost.

That is a good listing about the power emarie. I have always got myself lost as who actually has what power and from one episode to another, there would be more people with special powers and things can get really confusing at times.

There's also Molly Walker, the young girl whose parents were killed by Sylar. She can track down anyone and she only needs to have that person in mind. Her role has become an important part in Heroes.

There's plenty more that arent' listed here. I'll just mention them. You've probably have watched most of the series.
Sylar - ability to understand how things work (hence he can learn to use other heroes' powers)
Eden - power of persuasion
Haitian - power to remove memory and power to block other heroes from using their powers.
Indian boy - power to show you things in dreams
Nikki - superhuman power (not alter ego, she has alter ego because she is mentally weak. Jessica disappears when Nikki learns be face difficult situations on her own).
Chairlie (waitress) - ability to remember everything.
Claude - invisibility
Ted - nuclear abilities (can create EMPs)
Hana - wireless abilities (connect to the internet, etc).
Candice - power of illusion
Mr. Linderman - power to heal

Yeah you really need to pay attention to the episodes in this series, cos there are subtle hints everywhere. Its tricky, but its like if you miss one little thing you miss a whole plot line. Once you learn who the characters are firstly, then the show will show you if and how they all connect. Prepare for a wild ride :)
