It amazes me to think how different things are these days compared to when I was growing up. My children are living in a completely different world than the one I lived in when I was their age.
The song 'A Different World' by Bucky Covington really illustrates some of the differences between now and then. Here are the lyrics, tell me what you think:
We were born to mothers who smoked and drank
Our cribs were covered in lead based paint
No child proof lids no seat belts in cars
Rode bikes with no helmets and still here we are, still here we are
We got daddy’s belt when we misbehaved
Had three TV channels you got up to change
No video games and no satellite
All we had were friends and they were outside, playin’ outside
It was a different life
When we were boys and girls
Not just a different time
It was a different world
School always started the same every day
The pledge of allegiance then someone would pray
Not every kid made the team when they tried
We got disappointed and that was all right, we turned out all right
No bottled water, we drank from a garden hose
And every Sunday, all the stores were closed
It was a different world

i can relate. i remember when i was young and though about people who grew up without television, cars, stuff like that. i thought that i would never "outgrow" anything that was happening in my life. as i look back, i can remember the computer when it took up a whole room and when you programmed it and printed it the printout was little dots. you had to feed the paper in to rerun the program. kind of like a reel to reel tape player. you remember those, don't you? or 35mm movie projectors. now i sit here on my laptop. amazing. it really does make me wonder what the next generation will "outgrow". cool topic. thanks for the trip back in time.

you had to plug them into the car lighter to actually power them up. and the sad thing is, it doesn't seem that long ago. :(

We just moved into a great neighborhood, I find after living in the ghetto for years, it's weird to see kids playing at the end of the cul-de-sac, there's an ice cream man that comes by twice a day! But I agree that safety standards sure have changed, I remember rolling around on the floor of my dad's van while he drived on an interstate lol.

I was just discussing this yesterday at my son's "field days" They were playing kick ball and not allowed to throw the ball at each other. Remember when we used to "peg" each other to get an out. Now they can only run behind each other. I was talking to one of the other moms about how insane it is now. Everything is bad for you. Yet somehow us, our parents and even some of our grandparents are still alive. We didn't die horrible awful deaths. I agree 100% with these lyrics.

I think it's crazy that you can't throw the ball at the other kids to get an out. If someone really wanted to make a big deal out of it, they could say that it is unfair to the "bigger" kids because they aren't in shape and can't run fast enough to get the outs. It would be a never ending cycle of craziness. When will all this nonsense end?

I miss the good old days. Life was simplier and you didn't have to worry as much. I would love to be able to take my children back to the good old days.
I remember doing most of those things. My son ran up to me today and asked if he could go inside to get a drink. I looked over at him and said " When I was your age we didn't go inside to get a drink. We would turn on the water hose and grab a drink." He looked at me as if I asked him to commit murder.
I sure do miss those good old days.

I would have to agree with you, even as a person in his late 20's it still surprises me how different things have been since I was a little kid. Kids nowadays also seem to be aquantined to more technologies then even myself which always seems to catch me off guard every now and then. For me, the key is to continue and learn to keep up with what's new constantly.

Aint that the TRUTH ?!?
I have been reflecting a lot this lately about the different childhoods and teenage years, my children, grandchildren, myself, my mothers and my grandmothers and indeed my great grandmothers have experienced.
Do you know I think WE had the best!
So much so that I am actually writing a Social History type of book for my Grand children and hopefully THEIR grandchildren to go alongside the Geneology CD that I am completing. I thought a social history would be far more interesting then a load of dusty crusty names and dates, and faces of people they have not got a clue about. I know I would love to have had that done for me. So as I said before on reflection and as its turning out, yep, WE GOT THE BEST!!!

You are so right. We could probably add about 50 more verses to that poem! I wonder, though, if all "older" people always kind of long for "the good old days" no matter when those days were? There are many things I do like about these days--the computer being one. (Well--I do have a love/hate relationship with my computer, but most of the time I enjoy it.) On the other hand, I am glad I am my age. I would not want to be young and just starting out now.

I would think we can also see a difference between out thinking now and when we were growing up. That's life. It was a different world now and before. The world is "improving" at an alarming rate that somehow we might be outcasted if we continue to live with the mentality on how we were brought up. Look at the new generation. They are the ones shaping the future.

This song is very true, the world changes at a rapid pace each and every day. Some of the cnages are for the better and some of them for the worse. Either way, we have to learn to live with the changes. I think the reason this song has done so well is because we all can identify with it. Great post...

Yes things have definitely changed a lot from when we were kids. I just got done doing a discussion on how things have changed as far as letting kids play outside. It's sad but I guess there are somethings we just can not controle.

Yes,we are truly in different world;because we are not operating on the same foundation. We are opportuned to be in an era where technology is leading for us to follow,in those days technology was still in its infant stage but now technology in a sense has had a great leap which account why our type of life today is different. In fact i see a situation this gap will still get wider because we are not trying to 'discover 'things or technology but we are simply applying the result of what has already been discovered.
