Upside down tomatoes

Has anyone tried growing tomatoes or anything else, upside down? I ordered a small set for cucumbers and a large "tree" set for tomatoes. OK, I was late ordering them. The small set was delivered but the large one is still on backorder. So I planted two tomato plants in one of the hangers, and am waiting for my cucumber plants to get large enough to transplant in the other. I was picturing the plant cascading down, but they are curling up, which is what it says to expect. I was wondering if anybody has tried the Topsy Turvy method and what results you had. My Dad thought somebody had hung up a bag of trash in the garden. I hope that is not a sign of things to come!
