Looks play an important role in your overall apearence and so some time it makes a difference in making friends too!
There are things on surface level which have an impact on life because it is related with existence! There is only one thing to note that only surface level is not the main thing and inner beauty, inner attitude and virtues have more importance in the term of life long impact as a whole!

I think it play an important role in making friends. When I was a little girl, I just like a little boy. My family is poor at that time, so I have no beautiful clothes, and I am a common girl. It is difficult to make friends with me classmates. There is a beautiful girl in my class, I feel all of classmates are her friends. And all of boy like her, I feel the girl is very happy. And I am often laughed by boys, because my poor clothes and poor hair. They often have haircut in a saloon, and my dad often cut my hair if it turns long. Now I don't mind about those laughing at all. But if the time go back, I will not be ashamed of poorness.

For me, no, looks are not at all important when forging friendships. I am strictly looking for folks who have similar interests and whose company I enjoy! To insist that a friend be of a certain 'look' seems really childish and shallow to me.

Absolutely not. If that were the case I'd have no friends at all as I'm not exactly the best looking guy in the world. I pick my friends based on their personality and interests similar to mine...anything else is just shallow.
