You have to get out of the house in a hurry, maybe there is a fire extra,
You have made sure all the family is out and the animals are safe,
what is the next most important thing that you would want to take with you if you could.
for some it would be their wallet
maybe others would want to get a an expensive painting
or family photograph,
What would be the thing you would want to take with you if you could?
For me, I know my son would want to grab one of the computers, in case we don't have money to buy another one.

Good question!!!! Because of our age and physical condition my hubby and I are prepared for such an event. We have made copies of all important papers and put them in the safety deposit box. We keep at least a months supply of medications in our vehicle, along with a couple of changes of clothing, some blankets and other emergency items. Almost all of the family photos have been scanned and put on cds, they are also in the deposit box. Other important info and papers are also scanned and on cd. Included in both our vehicle emergency supply and in the deposit box are addresses and phone numbers we need, and an amount of cash, in small bills.
Part of this preparation is because of the age/physical condition thing but part is because we lost our home to fire many years ago and KNOW how difficult if not impossible some of this stuff is. I advise everyone to be prepared for disaster.

I am hoping that all you lost in that fire was stuff! After ours I cried over the lost things like those little plaster handprints kids made in first grade------but the hands were still on the people! We just lost stuff, some of it hard to replace, but I was so thankful no one was injured.

ha ha! grab on the computers.. you have a point there.. so I can still do some mylotting after that big fire ha ha!
Seriously, when the fire stroke to our nearby village, I can't calm down. We we're just two person in the house that time. Its just me and my grandma. of course, having the said situation, my grandma feel uncomfortable too because if ever the fire strikes our house, what will we do? where will we go?.. If I am going to choose who or what to save.. it would definitely be my grandma for she is the best thing life gave me. She took care of me since I was a baby, and up to now. I can't loose her. I certainly can afford to loose my computer, my clothes, my cellphone, my things.. but not her. :)

you did not read the discussion right hon, we are assuming your family and pets are safe, so it is something material that you may want to try and get out.

I would grab at least one of Nicholas' favorite toys. He would need something for comfort during this time. I would also want to get the family pictures that I could salvage at this time. everything else is replaceable but not the photos. I have actually had to think about this only I wasn't home to salvage anything at the time. When I was a junior in high school m our house burned down and I lost everything since the fire started in my room. The down stairs was able to be emptied out by neighbors before everything was destroyed.

I guess that is a lot of running around to do with 20 cats and all.
Maybe open the door and just hope they run outside. I know some animals get scared and they hide under beds and wont move.
I also know that to some people, their animals are just important as a child is to a mother.
I hope this never happens to you... You might have to turn into wonder woman or something... :)

To me the most important things after my family and pets would be to get out all my photos (there is many of them), anything of sentimental value such as my kids' baby books, stuff I have saved just for the sake of memories and such. Anything that no matter how much money I would make if I became a millionaire I still would not be able to replace these things I treasure.
So I would save everything that money can not buy. tvs, computers, couches could all be replaced eventually but pictures and other sentimental things could never.
good topic, thank you :)

We live in Tornado town, so we always have a suitcase ready to go with our important stuff that can't be replaced, like pictures of my kids. So I have pictures, rings, a few extra clothes for everyone and then I have diapers and wipes. I have all that in one suitcase. I feel it's stuff I will need and stuff that can't be replaced.
We have a plan just in case and we practice it during tornado season, withch is May. If we hear the alarms go off. My 4 year old knows to run to the front door and grab everybody's shoes for us and to put hers on and she is to wait by the door for the rest of us. I grab the baby and my husband grabs the suitcase and the laptop. LOL! I have to have my laptop!
We can't stay here in our home because if a tornado was to hit, we would be gone. So we always have to do this when we are in tornado warning and we have a family member that lives down the street pick us up, they have a house that has shelter, and we don't.
I guess we would also do the same thing in case of a fire, but you don't really get a warning for fire, like you do with tornados, so I would probably just grab the kids and leave as is. If I could, I would grab the suitcase that has all the pictures in it.

it depends on the fire, if it is next door, you have the firemen banging on your door to evacuate,
if it is in the house depends on whether you had a chance of seeing start or not that could make all the difference in the world,
like for example if it is a kitchen fire and you are in the other part of the house, you may have time to get out certain things before leaving or you may not.

Gosh there are just so many things I would not want to lose in a fire. We have just too many photo albums now that we couldn't possibly get them all out. If we were to have a fire today, I would grab my purse, my little shih-tzu puppy, make sure the cats were out and get out of the house .

My son and wife.
I'd also go back in and get anyone else out who I could no matter what. I'd put my parents lives before my own like they did when I was born, I wouldn't care if someone tried to talk me out of it.
I'm going and that's it.

This happened to me before. It was 2 in the morning when a fire broke out in one of my neighbor's house. I immediately woke my girls and brought them out of the street. I returned and grabbed my purse, my car key, mobile, my girl's school uniform, shoes, school bags, the whole case of CD photo album and the bag that contained all our important documents. I felt like a superwoman that time. But afterward, I started shaking and can't find my voice. Its a good thing the firemen was able to douse the fire right away.

It is crazy isn't it, my son did the same, our house was full of smoke because the next house was on fire, he ran around the house to find 5 cats and got them all out safely.

I would grab my cats first of all and toss them out the door. Then I would grab my computer! I can't afford to buy another one. Clothing I can go to thrift shops for but my computer I can't replace.

I'd wanna grab our wedding album and video, and it might sound silly, but, i'd wanna grab my positive pregnancy test! It means a lot to me, cuz we had been trying for quite some time, and now, this little stick with two lines, brought so much joy to me and my hubby!! I wouldn't risk getting burned over it, but if i knew where it was, and had time to retrieve it, i would on the way out!

I would grab my citizenship papers. I went through a lot of hoops to get it and I won't leave it behind. It is near my computer, so I would also grab my hard drive, the box which contains all my material. I have my book on the computer and all our photos. That would be hard to replace, if I ever could.

Well, you have specified all the family members are out. Now the next thing that i would like to take will be mine and all the members cellphones. Its like my cellphone is equal to my girlfriend. I keep in constant touch with her only through the cell phone. So i would prefer to take that.

hmmmmm...so thats a lot of emergency running around. Well if thats the case and i too need to run, i would just carry my wallet and mobile along. Moile for calling the fire engine to douse the flames at the earliest so that somehing more could be saved. and the money so that an alternative arrangement could be done to keep the momen and children save and under a roof.
